Amnesty International welcomes the Court of Appeal ruling in Abuja which discharged leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu of the charges against him. The Nigerian authorities must abide by the ruling, in compliance with its human rights obligations. #NnamdiKanu https://twitter.com/AmnestyNigeria/status/1580636256564019200?t=TsztFaVQ5qjVvGKUOcyRiQ&s=19 It is pertinent to note that the ruling showed that the authorities violated Nnamdi Kanu's rights to fair hearing. We urge Nigerian authorities to follow due process and to always respect and uphold human rights. #NnamdiKanu #nigeria https://twitter.com/AmnestyNigeria/status/1580636261164859392?t=1EdbHXZuu6w3tbUh0LHu2A&s=19 1 Like

Amnesty International will always defend the weak and vulnerable against a powerful government. And this is commendable. That said, political solution should be the best approach in this matter. If not, secessionist groups in the East and Nigerian security operatives will continue to kill each other. However, the people caught up in this crossfire are the innocent ones that are targeted when security operatives cannot face their opponents. This has always been their modus operandi. Like what soldiers have done in Zaki Biam, Odi and many towns in Imo State. But then, the two sides have lost their men and women. The best solution in this case is to get Kanu to denounce this agitation so he can regain his full freedom and their demands be looked into. I always say that if the political class has been fair to Nigerian peoples, nobody would be talking about pulling out of a union that has existed for more than a century. Nigeria should be restructured so that the ethnic nationalities can stop blaming Abuja and Fulani for everything wrong with the contraption. |
