I think it's to resist the expansion of NATO forces to it's borders.

That's not a good enough reason to kill your neighbor. NATO is already on his borders. And now he got Finland and Sweden to join. So he made a bad call.

Having NATO on the border does not mean that NATO will attack Russia, because Russia has Nukes, and NATO is not looking for Nuclear war.
