Your story is very refreshing and inspiring. What you said is true. Attitude is everything. I always tell everyone, you can achieve whatever you want to achieve but you've got to put in the work.

Your narrative reminded me of my experience as a manager. It was a difficult one for me because those crop of workers were unserious grin. I get all sorts of silly excuses for missing work and they frustrated me. I was passionate about training and getting Nigerians to take on technical roles but many of them messed up. They were more interested in an outlandish way of life instead of focusing on the work at hand. One of the Engineers got drunk on site and I had to bring in a American in 96 hours to complete the job.

Ethics are very critical in our society today. Irrespective of where you are, hard work, dedication and soft skills are very important today. Many Nigerians who are "good" should not have issues migrating. Employers need work to be done and don't care where you come from as long as you meet the requirements. I and a friend assisted over a hundred persons in migrating from Nigeria to Canada, US, and UK.

Migrating is not as easy as before because of competition and the japa craze but if you are technically competent or academically sound. You can get to wherever you want.
I see reason in all you just wrote however I will disagree with you on your last few lines, I believe its more easier to migrate now than B4.I left Nigeria 1999/200, back then in Lagos you need to go to the Embassy 4am or else no space. Men with white bear bear nah dey there, we then were just kids wey get mind from Warri. Now you can sit t home and Apply. You can even get someone Abroad to apply on your behalf. We as Nigerians are now better informed than B4 s well.Internet sure did us a great deal of good.

The process is much easier now than before grin. The application process can be completed online but most of the applicants are not qualified thereby causing long wait times. Every dick and harry just go online and apply and the approval rate is very low. Some few years ago rejection rate was about 70% for US non-immigrant visas. Someone was telling him that he got a May 2024 interview date when he's supposed to travel June 2023.

Another problem people like you have is selective reading and reasoning. I said amongst the leaders we have, at one time of thier lives they must have schooled , lived or hustled abroad and vast majority of them have their families abroad..
As for the conversion of pounds to naira, that's the levels your bross them dey take discharge you wen U ask them for urgent N20k
PS £1 is almost N1k if you must know so someone doing care job in the Uk might just be able to send N1million to their savings account in Nigeria monthly.Stay there dey lose gaurd.

A friend of mine is in a dilemma and has asked me to advice him on what do.

I'm confused myself, hence I'm bringing this here for those who are experienced to give their candid opinion.

My friend sent his wife to Australia 2 years ago on a student visa. He stayed back with the children and has been taking proper care of them since the wife left. The children are aged 10 and 8. The first child is in primary 6 and will enter secondary school next year. The second child, a boy, is in primary 4 and will move to primary 5 next year.

My friend's wifey just obtained her PR last month courtesy of one company she worked for and which nominated her.

Now the dilemma.

MY friends wifey wants the family to join her. The children are eager to move to Australia. But my friend is skeptical.
His skepticism comes from two main factors: 1) he is 49 Years, 2) He is gainfully ( by Nigerian Standard) employed. Takes home about N900k per month working for a private company.

My friend will not be able to support the family abroad if he is to allow the children to move to Australia while he remains in Nigeria. Eg if he sends AUD 1500, a month to them ( which is about N750K), it wont be able to pay the children's school fees let alone feed.

My friend want to know whether to join the family and do any menial or odd jobs he can lay hands on and at least be able to join hands with the wifey and see the children through university is Australia. Which to him will be a landmark achievement in life.

His wifey has told him not to worry that he will get something doing when he arrives.

Please advice.
your friend is a fool...how can you live 900k job in Nigeria going to Australia to do degrading jobs ...even manual jobs

Where is dignity of people ...He can't allow his wife to dictate for him. he also should train his kids in Nigeria so that they don't get lost when they travel and never return home

Leave your frustration when advising people.

In EUROPE, its hard to get a JOB without Permit, Please always remember this.

The Schengen union makes it difficult for anyone without documents, and that is why you see most of those guys (Migrants ) trying to stoway in trucks into the UK because they believe that it's easier over there, but in truth, it is not!

France is a great place to be, Germany is , and ITALY is wonderful, but without that permit, you will work so much and earn little pay done by hand!
Europe over the UK 1 million times.

erico2k2:

The UK sent Eu citizens packing at the end of Brexit cos they were the brakers of Benefit rules. The earn loads and pay less, if not tell me why a sane Polish person or one from Hungary or Romania would change thier citizenship to be British?
if I had left Nigeria, I laugh in Spanish, When I joined nairaland in 2007 we were less than 100 persons on Nairaland, about 40% of us then lived abroad as Internet was not widespread like we have today in Nigeria if you know who Mr Pataki is then you can start talking. I will say this to you one last time, if you go to the Migrant Camp in France a Calaise, you can ask yourself this simple question, why do we have Thousands of persons camping at the channel tunnel crossings.
PS, U sabi EUrope and live in Europe but you cannot name the country you live in Europe, shame dey catch U?

Fact!!!
You spend so much millions just to be a third class citizen in another man's land...

A very senior banking officer in my former place of work. Who earns between 700k. Resign, sold some of his property to finance his travel.. today my former colleague is doing two jobs just to be able to take care of his family... The quality of his life there, can not be compared to when he was here... It's damn easier to make it here...take a personal vacation/business vacation to this country and get your brain refresh with new ideas.
Any idea u bring back is a new thing... That can make you more more money..
I don't know what you have to say... It's damn easier to make it in this country... If u can be diligent with this kind of money u want to waste in the name of Japa...

You have a very good point there!

Your colleague went to school dazall. After study if he finds a job and an employer willing to sponsor his work permit he can continue his career. We should be aware that prior to 2012 when the post-study visa was suspended, not everyone was able to remain in the UK after their academic program. Some spent 2 years after their program and had to leave the country. Seeking study leave from employer was a more common practice. In addition, I only met one Nigerian student with dependents. Most others I knew had their families back in Nigeria while they studied in UK for up to four years (undergraduate and doctorate students) Today Nigeria is worse off. UK is also worse than it was 10 years ago but people are giving a lot to UK. In my opinion, Canada has a direct pathway to permanent residency without having to be a student and should be a better option for Japa people. I pray everyone's japa strategy and plans work out.

Wow this is very interesting. Thanks for sharing. I have never heard of the boaz and ELimelec story and insight. One has to be very prayerful and really dig deep to understand where God wants them to prosper. Although ELimelec left the land when there was famine, it was still a bad decision moving, or whereas the location they relocated to wasnt a fruitful place. So. Crazy. God help us.

Migration didn't start in our generation. People have been doing it right from creation. As for me, I believe strongly that I will live life to its fullest in this country. Boaz became a billionaire where Elimelec japa from... it's all about mindset.
