The prostate is a small gland in men that helps make semen.

Located just below the bladder in front of the rectum, it wraps around the tube that carries urine and semen out of the body.

A man's prostate produces the seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm.

It tends to grow larger as you get older.

If your prostate gets too large, it can cause a number of health issues

The cause of prostate enlargement is unknown, but it's believed to be linked to hormonal changes as a man gets older.

The balance of hormones in your body changes as you get older and this may cause your prostate gland to grow.

People may experience:

Urinary: dribbling after urination, excessive urination at night, frequent urination, sense of incomplete bladder emptying, urge to urinate and leaking, or weak urinary stream

Also common: incontinence or sexual dysfunction

Treatments include medication that relaxes the bladder or shrinks the prostate, and minimally invasive surgery.

There could be cancer in a man's prostate, a small walnut-sized gland that produces seminal fluid.

Early prostate cancer symptoms:

Burning or pain during urination.

Difficulty urinating, or trouble starting and stopping while urinating.

More frequent urges to urinate at night.

Loss of bladder control.

Decreased flow or velocity of urine stream.

Blood in urine (hematuria)

Blood in semen.

Erectile dysfunction.

PSA Test differentiate prostate enlargement from prostate cancer.

What is the PSA test? Prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, is a protein produced by normal, as well as malignant, cells of the prostate gland.

The PSA test measures the level of PSA in a man's blood.

For this test, a blood sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Normal PSA level is considered to be 4.0 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) of blood, but this varies by age:

For men in their 50s or younger, a PSA level should be below 2.5 in most cases.

Older men often have slightly higher PSA levels than younger men.

A PSA value of 4.0 to 10.0 ng/mL is suspicious and might suggest the possibility of prostate cancer.

It is associated with a 25% chance of having prostate cancer.

10.0 ng/mL and above is dangerous and should be discussed with your doctor immediately.

It is associated with a 50% chance of having prostate cancer.
