Hemp is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant species that is grown specifically for the industrial uses of its derived products. It is one of the fastest-growing plants and was one of the first plants to be spun into usable fiber 10,000 years ago. It can be refined into a variety of commercial items, including paper, textiles, clothing, biodegradable plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel, food, and animal feed. Although cannabis as a drug and industrial hemp both derive from the species Cannabis sativa and contain the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), they are distinct strains with unique phytochemical compositions and uses. Hemp has lower concentrations of THC and higher concentrations of cannabidiol (CBD), which decreases or eliminates its psychoactive effects.

The legality of industrial hemp varies widely between countries. Some governments regulate the concentration of THC and permit only hemp that is bred with an especially low THC content. Hemp is used to making a variety of commercial and industrial products, including rope, textiles, clothing, shoes, food, paper, bioplastics, insulation, and biofuel. The bast fibers can be used to make textiles that are 100% hemp, but they are commonly blended with other fibers, such as flax, cotton, or silk, to make woven fabrics for apparel and furnishings. The inner two fibers of the plant are woodier and typically have industrial applications, such as mulch, animal bedding, and litter.

When oxidized (often erroneously referred to as "drying"wink, hemp oil from the seeds becomes solid and can be used in the manufacture of oil-based paints, in creams as a moisturizing agent, for cooking, and in plastics. Hemp seeds have been used in bird feed mix as well. A survey in 2003 showed that more than 95% of hemp seed sold in the European Union was used in animal and bird feed. Hemp fiber has been used extensively throughout history, with production climaxing soon after being introduced to the New World. For centuries, items ranging from rope to fabrics, to industrial materials were made from hemp fiber. Hemp was also commonly used to make sail canvas. The word "canvas" is derived from the word cannabis. Modern hemp processing facilities are highly efficient.

Green House Seeds Co. is the only company in the world that uses a supercritical CO2 extraction process to obtain the highest quality hemp oil available. This process preserves the phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and other sensitive compounds within the hemp plant. Hemp seeds contain all 20 amino acids, including the nine essential amino acids that our bodies cannot produce. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Hemp seeds are also a great source of fiber, essential fatty acids, and vitamins and minerals. They have a 3:1 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3, which is considered the optimum ratio for human health. Hemp is also known for its environmentally friendly qualities. It requires little to no water to grow and is naturally resistant to pests and weeds. Hemp can also help reverse deforestation, as it can be used to replace trees that have been cut down.

The University of Kentucky is conducting research to determine the best uses of hemp for Kentucky's farmers. Some of the potential applications being studied include biodegradable plastics, animal bedding, paper products, construction materials, and fuel. The university is also working on developing new strains of hemp that will be better suited for Kentucky's climate and soil. Hemp has a long history in the United States. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both grew hemp on their plantations. Early American settlers used hemp for fabric, sails, and rope. In fact, the Declaration of Independence was drafted on hemp paper.

During World War II, the United States government commissioned a film called "Hemp for Victory" to encourage farmers to grow hemp to help with the war effort. After the war, the government again discouraged hemp production, as it was competing with other crops for resources. In recent years, there has been a resurgence in interest in growing hemp.

Hemp can be used to create a number of different textile products. Hemp fabric is durable and absorbent, making it ideal for a range of applications. Hemp clothing is popular for its comfort and breathability, and hemp towels and bedding are also gaining popularity.

Hemp is a versatile and sustainable material that can be used to create a variety of products. Hemp clothing is popular for its comfort and breathability, and hemp towels and bedding are also gaining popularity. Hemp is also an excellent material for making rope and twine. The strong fibers of hemp make it ideal for a number of different applications, including mooring lines, sails, and nets. Hemp can also be used to create a range of building materials.

Hempcrete is a type of concrete made with hemp that is lighter and more insulating than traditional concrete. Hemp insulation is also becoming popular as a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to fiberglass insulation. Hemp is also being explored as a possible biofuel. The oil from hemp seeds can be used to create biodiesel, and the hemp plant itself can be used to create biomass fuel. Hemp biofuel has the potential to be a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
