successmatters: It didn't start today. It was there since the beginning of Nigeria. IBB regime to took to the highest level and UT stayed there. Most of the youths shouting today are even worse than the oldies. If you look at the performance of the governors, you will notice that the younger ones are the most useless ones. 3 Likes |

successmatters: You should read the book 'This present darkness: a history of Nigerian organised crime' Corruption has always been with us, and it got bad in the 1960's...and even went to higher levels in the 1970's and stratospheric levels under IBB. |

Kagd10: No, the subsidy was first brought in in 1973 largely because of the Yom Kippur War which led to a spike in crude oil prices, which led to a rise in the cost of petrol....and yes, even then, we were not making enough crude to meet our needs (in 1973, we had just the Warri and Port Harcurt Refinery)...so subsides were brought in to cushion the costs. Intially it was on petrol, diesel and kerosene...(in 2013, GEJ removed the subsidy on kerosene and diesel totally). Because of subsides, we had the problem of smuggling out of fuel then (yes, it happened in the 1970's...Stephen Elllis' book This Present Darkness gives a good summary)...magnified by a very stronk currency. Yes, we built two new refineries....Kaduna AND new port harcourt...but we kept on paying subsides. By the late 1980's, the fuel price was below the cost of production. By 1990, queues were back on our roads , by 1994, TAM maintenance stopped. By 2011, we were producing less than 6mliters of our 20-40m liters of petrol in Nigeria....all because subsidy. I am going to conclude by asking you to read the link below. Before you respond to me. THE FUEL SUBSDIES |
Re: Customs Detains Owombo Segun John For Exposing Booming Petrol Smuggling Business by Nobody: 5:42am On Nov 12, 2022 |
SUNNINO: There was fuel smuggling under GEJ as well as such sharp practices like collecting subsidy for fuel not imported.... GEJ did try to stop all that by removing subsidy completely (it was sold as partial...but it was far more thorough). Nigerians, including many of you his supporters , said no. |

Kobonaire234: The man wanted to remove subsidy, period. The principal opposition to that was political and championed by the present ruling party and it's promoters. So don't try and twist history. We were all here. What do you mean by 'many of you his supporters'. We always love to play the sentimental card and it does no good. Now that this government has seen the light why has it not summoned the courage to remove it. Isn't is clear that they are trapped by their own propaganda and cannot sacrifice whatever is left of their tattered popularity for proper order. 3 Likes |

Reference: Because most Nigerians are opposed to subsidy removal. That is why no Nigerian leader, not even Abacha , has completely removed fuel subsides. All they do is partial removal from time to time...and that is because cold reality forces their hands. It is a cold fact of life. Yes, Buhari too opposed subsidy removal...I am not going to deny that, and I am not his supporter, nor was I gej supporter...but the fact is, most Nigerians are opposed to subsidy removal...because cheap fuel prices benefit the poor...as much as free subsidy money benefits the elite....at the long term expense of our economy. Even the smuggling...a lot of small timers are into it. Not just the big tankers. The idea that Buhari somehow misled millions of Nigerians into opposing GEJ subsidy removal is not possible. I was a subsidy supporter till 2011, when my eyes were opened. And yes it was by PDP government subsidy removal messages. Yes, I was tired of PDP, but not tired enough to actually listen. But what most Nigerians saw was fuel was N65 now it is N140. Even if Buhari had kept quiet, they would have still marched. At the end, no matter how much you try to explain on this site....Nigerians love subsidy. Buhari joined the bandwagon in 2012...even though he is also a hardcore supporter...as his actions in 2015 showed. It took the cold arm of economic reality to even force him to remove subsides partially in 2015, and again in 2018 and so on. Even now, most people here want the subsidy to continue. (Try arguing for fuel subsidy removal for a day on this site. You will be angry and frustrated for nothing at the end of the day). |

olisaEze: Well-said. Perception and understanding beyond the average. What you highlight is why SW Governors are demanding regional governance. Buhari they worked so hard and uncompromisingly to get into power was the 'litmus test' for the North because of his so-called integrity. Yet all that Buhari did was confirm conclusively that Northern leaders, rather than be innovative, developmental and progressive, will always parochially use the wealth and most important political/institutional offices of Nigeria to prop up the parochial and unfair enrichment of the North and even nations beyond our borders like Niger Republic. To show the inhuman wickedness in the region, not a kobo gets to the talakawas despite the billions the big men are carting home. It is a system and reality Atiku will continue. Yorubas today want either the Presidency to use in reforming Nigeria into a fairer, more modern and progressive nation or outright regional governance so we are no longer tied to 'one Nigeria' regressiveness. We will get one or the other too because we now realize everything is worse for us, be it security or socio-economic potentials, and will never improve under 'one Nigeria' as currently constituted and headed by Northerners. It is not so much a choice but a necessity. We now feel we are in an existential fight for survival and no longer just 'Party politics'. We are not interested in that anymore because too much damage is being done to us in the name of 'one Nigeria' and Presidential system of governance as constituted. 2 Likes

Kobonaire234: It is simply not true that most Nigerians are opposed to fuel subsidy removal. It is like saying most Nigerians are opposed to inflation or rising prices. Do they have a choice in any of these. Do they decide the factors that lead to these. There is a conspiracy amongst those who personally benefit from the system to create fear and thus misinform the citizens (who have no say whatsoever in the way government operates) about the need to end it. If subsidy is removed today it is still the same government this time through trade unions that will oppose it. And these people remain less than 5 percent of the population and by extension less than 5 percent of the consumers of petrol. The 95 percent who have not opposed the reckless spendings of government from wanton loans, to build billion naira offices and buy million naira dogs will still not be able to oppose fuel price increases. That is the simple truth. But someone somewhere in the corridors is holding back the removals and hiding behind the imaginary threat. I'm sorry but I simply don't buy that. There are people out there that have been buying PMS for 300, 400 almost all year. Abuja residents have been buying PMS for 200, 250 for weeks on end and scarcity has been more or less constant since February. Has the government fallen? 1 Like |

But like I said...open a thread on this site, and argue for subsidy removal. Them go pepper you well well. Subsides are, like Kolawole Simon said in this day...our entitlement. It is also the only thing that the corrupt rich and the suffering poor agree is in their 'interest', when really it isn't. |

Kobonaire234: Oga. A thread on this site IS NOT THE REALITY OF NIGERIA. Government is doing worse things than that presently and nothing,. absolutely nothing is happening. Nigerians are not fools. They know what good and bad government is. They know they are limited by the sentiments they play. Fuel subsidy and the devalued naira, which is worse.? The naira has fallen by almost 400 percent since this government came in, what has happened, nothing. People out there are still prepared to vote the government back. The government in next year's budget intends to continue fuelling inflation by funding legacy projects of no macro economic benefits whatsoever, who has said no. Is there anything they desperately wanted to do they have not done to damage this country.... I know this government in and out and know their body language when they want to do a thing. They have not made any attempt whatsoever to remove subsidies. Sound bites by the Minister of Finance and Minister of State Petroleum is all we have heard for 7 years. The GEJ government did far more than that in trying to stop the rot. Let us see what the next government will do. 2 Likes |

More thanks to the Afonja who singled him out to make him running mate to Yaradua. Further thanks to the Afonja who campaigned vigorously when Yaradua was sick and Jonathan was an unknown number and nobody. We must thank the Afonjas who spoke out when Yarduas cabal was pushing GEJ here and there at Yarduas death! Those same Afonjas helped him complete Yarduas tenure and another 4 years. Dsalvo: The Dan-Arewa of northern Nigeria don’t realize that Buhari was a litmus test that has defined what the North means by integrity. A man that’d rather be loyal to the Fulani elite outside Nigeria than the many talakawas that consistently voted him loyally for sixteen years in Nigeria has no iota of integrity. Atiku a product of such an evil system will not be any different. His deleting of the Deborah Samuel tweet is an amber loud indicator that he will maintain that system and do nothing differently. The 2023 presidential election is really a fight for our survival in the South, since it’s our resources that is being shared so indiscriminately to foreigners by a very foolish demography in the north! |

End fuel subsidy and this will stop. It's impossible for Nigeria to mount security posts in the 17000km border to end this. So just end subsidy and it will end |

olisaEze: I have been very shocked by this from Buhari and so too many Southerners, from leaders to followers, who supported him passionately because of belief in his touted integrity and discipline. The way the talakawas supported Buhari so absolutely and loyally, I was convinced he would elevate them bravely and uncompromisingly as priority above everything and everyone else in the North. I thought Buhari had the integrity, bravery and sincerity to reform the North through aggressive and compulsory free quality education to bring the North closer to the South, per efficacy of human resources, and destroy deleterious practices such as the Almajiri system and unproductive discrimination against women and the girl child. I thought he would see the need to modernize livestock and crop farming as a matter of commercial urgency capable of increasing and spreading wealth ithat can help to free the region's near 100% dependence on Government allocation and stipends for survival. I believed Buhari would have seen the literally thousands of report showing the North's main problem is low entrepreneurial efficacy and very poor SME wealth proliferation. I thought Buhari would do much more to reform the North, as the moderate Kemal Mustafa Ataturk reformed Turkey immensely, so the North can be an asset to herself and a complement to Nigeria rather than a continuous liability. Alas I and many others were terribly wrong. Can't say which way forward for the North for sure, given the damage done over the past 8 years, but wise and exposed Northerners will know it is unlikely their region and people can make progress under Atiku. 1 Like |

Perfectbeing: No. We need institional reforms and reduction of the powers of the Presidency and executive arm so it is not subject to random hijacking and abuse as is the case today. Bring in removal of fuel subsidy today and a substantial amount of our crude could still be making it across our border undocumented and totally unaccounted for as abuse of executive power allows Zamfara keeps 100% profit of her gold sales today. Restructure Nigeria and adopt resource control. ND can control sales of her crude, completely at source, and pay a tax to the center. FG can still retain oversight function. Let us all go and do same in our respective States because this is what the current government is assisting Zamfara to do with her gold sales with the difference being that Zamfara pays nothing to Nigeria. If we retain the inordinately powerful Preside trial system we have today, that allows everything to keep going through the centre, then we will forever keep self-destructive mago mago alive. Every State can sell their endowment at source and government can create a compliance board to ensure integrity and check-and-balance accountability is retained throughout the chain. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vanguardngr.com/2020/11/its-unlawful-for-zamfara-to-control-gold-okowa/amp/
