Frankly, some people are too easily and too often insulted, even by the smallest hurt or remark, real or imagined. I remember when I told my father, who was a politician (an honest one) that I wanted to study for the priesthood. He told me, "Son, if you want to serve people in public life, you must always choose not to be insulted! Let go of nasty remarks and God will show you his mercy". In other words, treat others better than they deserve and God will do the same for you.

There is an old Irish proverb: "Love your enemies; it will drive them crazy!" We might say, "kill them with kindness!" A woman once asked Abraham Lincoln, "How could you speak kindly of those southern traitors, rebels and our enemies?" "Well madam," he replied " Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?" Jesus taught, "forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your father, who is in heaven, also may forgive you all your trespasses" (Mt 11:25)
