Anyone can make a decision; anyone can set a goal. Two people can set out to achieve the same goal and end up with completely unrelated results. What categorizes these two classes is the approach by which they reached this goal. Whether you are setting a goal to take an online course or travel out for further studies, there are 5 essential questions your goals must be able to answer in the simplest and most direct way:

S — (specific): What exact pain point is your goal addressing?

M — (Measurable): Will you be able to track your progress?

A — (Achievable): Given the timeframe and resources at your disposal, is it likely that you are able to hit this goal?

R — (Relevant): Using a priority scale, how important is this goal to you?

T (timebound): When is the latest time expected for this goal to lapse?

If you were able to answer all of those questions, you might have used the SMART model of setting goals indirectly. The acronym SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-Bound. The model provides the framework for setting clear and achievable goals.

THE SMART MODEL
SPECIFIC
Your goal should be clearly defined. It should converge on a central theme. It should include details of what you intend to achieve. For example, you want to have saved $20 for the Side Hustle Bootcamp by the end of April 2023. To achieve this, you will save at least $5 of your monthly income.

2. MEASURABLE

Your progress should be trackable. You should be able to determine how close or far you are to meeting your goal. For example, by the end of January 2023, you should be able to measure how much you have been able to save.

3. ACHIEVABLE

Your goal should not be impossible to achieve. Your current reality and action points should culminate in your set goal. For example, to save at least $5, you need to earn at least $5 monthly.

4. REALISTIC

When you take factors that might influence your goal into consideration, your goal should still be achievable. This makes it realistic. For instance, can you still save at least $5 of your monthly paycheck after paying for food and utilities?

5. TIME-BOUND

It is important to have a defined time frame when setting goals. This allows you to be able to meet the vision for the goal. For instance, you need to pay for the Side Hustle BootCamp by April 2023. Your savings goals should have a maximum time limit of March 2023.

When you set your goals wisely, you can achieve them!.
