LESS than two months to the local government election in Lagos State, violence erupted yesterday among members of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), leaving six of them seriously injured. The clash occurred between supporters of two chairmanship aspirants of the party in Lagos Island Local Council Development Authority (LCDA).

Four members of the warring factions were arrested by policemen from Area ‘A’ Command, Lion Building but were later released when some stalwarts of the party intervened.

Narrating what led to the clash, an eye witness said that one of the ACN leaders on the Island, Alhaji Tajudeen Olusi, had endorsed the former Vice Chairman of the LCDA, Kehinde Ashekun Owo-Iya, as the next chairman to replace the out-going Chairman, Mr. Mufutau Kadiku (KDK), which did not go down well with other ACN leaders who were in support of the former Secretary of the LCDA, Kamal Bashua.

It was gathered that the attack took place at a reconciliation meeting between the factions during which those in attendence had to run for dear lives.

“The two warring factional leaders were present at the meeting along with other leaders as early as 9a.m. to settle the matter, but the meeting ended in a deadlock because Baba RF strongly disagreed with Baba Olusi's action for trying to impose an aspirant on other leaders,” a source said.

Alhaji Razaq Folorunsho Balogun (Baba RF) is supporting Bashua and Olusi is supporting Ashekun.

“Their supporters, who got wind of what was happening at the meeting, started to attack themselves outside the council secretariat with dangerous weapons like bottles, knives and cutlasses,” the source said.
