Oil Theft: 27 Crew Members of Rogue Vessel, MT Heroic Idun, Arraigned

The Nigerian Navy (NN) at the weekend successfully brought back from Equitorial Guinea, a crude carrier, Supertanker MT HEROIC IDUN and her crew members to face criminal charges for offences committed within the country’s maritime domain.

HEROIC IDUN has been in the news since August after it evaded arrest by NNS GONGOLA around the AKPO Oil Field where it was found at the wee hours of August 8 without valid papers.

The vessel with capacity to carry over three million barrels of crude oil, had allegedly claimed it was scheduled to load product and was awaiting instructions from its owners, agents when the warship intercepted it.

Upon establishing that the crude carrier which had a crew of 26 persons comprising 16 Indians, eight Sri Lankans, a Polish and one Filipino nationals was around the restricted area illegally, the naval warship ordered the vessel to alter its course and move towards Bonny Fairway Buoy but the ship rather fled to Equatorial Guinea.

The Nation had reported how the vessel which was eventually arrested in the Central African country in line with the Yaounde Code, provided a loading document which was however several days ahead of the date it was caught around the oil field.

“The vessel has been successfully brought back home and its crew members have been arraigned in court in Rivers State,.

“Interestingly, the vessel that the captain claimed was bad and cannot sail back to Nigeria sailed unaided. It didn’t need the help of the two tugboats the NN moved to that country to tow it back. The vessel is now anchored at Bonny,” he said.

Contacted, Director of Naval Information (DINFO), Commodore Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan confirmed MT HEROIC IDUN arrived Bonny on Saturday afternoon, adding that the legal team of the Navy has taken up the case in collaboration with prosecutorial agencies.

Justice Adamu Turaki Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, yesterday remanded in custody 16 of the foreign nationals for alleged involvement in crude oil theft.

They were charged with illegal oil bunkering.

The incident allegedly happened around Akpo Oil Field within Rivers State in August.

The suspected oil thieves are being prosecuted by the Nigerian Navy.

Those arraigned yesterday pleaded not guilty and were remanded on the vessel (Mt. Heroic Idun). The case was adjourned till today for the other suspects to also take their plea.

The charge sheet stated, among others, that the suspects “sometime in the month of August 2022 at Akpo Oil Field Rivers State…attempted to deal in crude oil within the Nigeria Exclusive Economic zone without lawful authority and you thereby committed an offence contrary to section 1 (17) of the miscellaneous offences Act, 2004”.

Sixteen of the accused persons who were present in the court, including Captain of the ship Mehta Tanuj, an Indian.

Justice Mohammed ordered that the men be remanded on the vessel with security personnel and that access be granted them to their medical needs.

Let them recover all money stolen through oil stealing from all the thieves and let the money be used to settle the petroleum subsidy. Let all the perpetrators including the corroborators in Government be brought to book either by hook or crook.

Great job by our Patriotic Naval officers. Thank you for standing up for our great nation. Our institutions work! This is so highly professional and advanced crime bursting only an ignorant person would think is beyond the capability of Nigerian Armed Forces.

This should serve as a memo to foreigners and ignorant Nigerians who do crime. When they tell you that nonsense of 'this is Nigeria' and you foolishly fall for them, just know that you are digging your own grave. When the poop hits the fan, those same folks who led you by the nose will abandon you to your fate. These guys will never believe that someday they will sleep and languish in a Nigerian jail and will require their family members to travel down to Nigeria to visit them in jail! Where are their sponsors and advisers right now? smh.

All the enemies of Nigeria will lose las las. They always lose. God bless Nigeria for ever! May the population of our Patriots continue to grow and may all our unpatriotic elements continue to diminish in life and number.

Well done to all the Patriots who made this possible.
