Sexual Assault In Nigeria Secondary Schools By Male Teachers:a Real Life Story by Sanbella(m): 12:03pm On Nov 25, 2022
I will be discussing in my write up today about the level of moral decadence in our public secondary schools.
I drew my inspiration to write this piece because am uncomfortable with what is happening in our secondary schools as regards the harm that's caused by this so-called teachers and this has made me to become a prime crusader against this sinful act.
When I was a kid, I have watched series of sexual assault by male teachers to the student in the television, I thought that it's an imagined act but my adventure in a public secondary after I left private school cleared my doubt.
Upon getting to this school, I heard some rumors of a particular male teacher about his promiscuity with students. I don't really dwell on rumors and I thought this is just a set up to cause the downfall of the teacher maybe they(students) hated him.
On the long run, I later became a victim of that unfortunate circumstance.
Readers should please pay a rapt attention to this piece below.
There's this beautiful lady, I dated when I was in SSS 2. I started loving this girl the very first day I set my eyes on her and I asked her out which she accepted promptly. I was happy when she accepted my proposal and we displayed our love by hugging ourselves and talking most times,as secondary school lovers will always do. Many of my classmates got to know we are dating because of the public displaying of our irresistible love.
This girl told me on one of our numerous love adventures that the male teacher that was accused when I first arrived in the school have asked her out but she refused. I felt uneasy upon hearing this, I trusted the girl and knew she can't afford to lie to me so I didn't take it seriously since she has refused the proposal.
But one fateful day, I was surprised when a senior informed me that I am called by this male teacher in his office and I went with anxiety (not knowing what's happening),I got to his office and he called my name three times which made me more afraid and he said authoritatively that I should leave the girl that I am dating. At that time, I was confused about how he knew we were dating but I believe some gossipers among us will have divulged that.
At that period of time, I was embarrassed and frightened because I have not been threatened by a teacher in such an harsh tone because of a relationship with my classmates before.
Because of the great love I have for the girl, I summoned courage and got determined not to leave this girl. The teacher discovered that I was adamant about leaving the girl.
He frustrated me during these times and punished me unnecessarily. He developed an high level of hatred to the extent of punishing my friends severely even when it does not worth the apportioned punishment. For instance, one of my Close friend, Segun was beaten by this teacher that he bled seriously just because he was making noise and he was not the only one doing that. He made life miserable for me then and all those that are closer to me.
In addition to the sufferings given out by this teacher, he changed my seat from the front to the back so as to lose communication with my girlfriend.
Surprisingly, This girl sent a letter to me through my friend and she wrote in the letter that she can't go on with the relationship without any reasons.
Because of my dignity that i cherished alot, I didn't beg her but one huge event happened that still looks like a mystery to me till now.
This girl fell down on the track in the preparation for inter house sports after the break up with me and was rushed to an hospital nearby the school. After she received some treatment and tests carried out, the medical unit discovered that she's some months pregnant and informed the school management about this.
She was asked about the man responsible for the pregnancy and I heard that this teacher was also mentioned. But later , this girl have to withdrew from secondary school at a tender age because of her pregnancy.
After this event, I was expecting the school management to probe or query this teacher for this act but I didn't hear anything. With the look of things, it seems the school management are afraid of him.

Then I thought of stopping this evil doer from perpetuating more evils. I made up a plan by writing to the school management to establish a school press, thinking that it will serve as avenue to expose evil doings of male teachers that engage in heinous crimes especially sexual assault to be specific.
The school management approved it with a condition of strict supervision by some teachers and all what the school press is allowed to do is to cast news on assembly grounds.
I got disappointed by this and even when I was appointed as the head prefect, I did all that is within my reach by leading countless delegations to the school management by discussing the strengthening of the school press club and establishments of other clubs.
As if they can perceive what am up to, our memos were delayed and not worked upon. So I gave up about the strengthening of the school press although the press fold up some months later.
In similar vein, I got to SSS 3 and overheard that this same teacher got an SSS 1 student pregnant and aborted for her.
To my amazement, The school management kept mute again.
Also, when we were sitting for external examinations (WAEC AND NECO), Another male teacher (different from the previous one) that I trusted so well asked my close friend out and I was astonished when I discovered this. He further begged the girl's friend to persuade her to accept the proposal but the girl refused.
I was unhappy with the way my school is bedridden with those bad attitudes. There are numerous cases of sexual assault by the male teachers in my schools and neighbouring schools and this has been causing a great decline in the educational sector of my area.

EFFECTS OF THIS SINFUL ACT
1. Destinies are truncated by exposing them to pre- marital sex: For instance, my ex- girl friend has to been withdrawn from school because of the pregnancy. WHO KNOWS IF THE TEACHER IMPREGNATED HER?? BUT HE'S A SUSPECT AND WAS MENTIONED BECAUSE OF HIS ATTITUDE

2. Punishing their rivals during the act: I was punished by the teacher unnecessarily because he saw me as a barrier or hindrance to his relationship with the girl. During this period,I was mentally unstable and it affected me academically because I am sometimes punished unnecessarily when am supposed to be in the class receiving lectures

3. Aborting for the unlucky students that can't resist the relationship as a result of threats: A similar case is that of the SSS 1 student that was said to have aborted a pregnancy that belongs to the teacher, this abortion may claim the life of the student or make her barren for life.

4. Inferiority complex that leads to suicide sometimes:Some student's that are caught in this act can't mingle with most of their classmates because of the shame especially if they are pregnant and some thinks of the best way to reduce the shame is to commit suicide.

WAYS OF PREVENTING THIS ACT

1. Government punishing offenders: A strict penalty should be imposed on male teachers caught in this act as this will stop potential offenders to desist from the act of destroying the girl's lives. Also students found engaging in sexual relationships with teachers should be remanaded and later rehabilitated.

2. Counsellors in each school should be fully active in our schools:
Many counsellors in our public secondary schools are not doing their work which makes most of the student to go astray. Imagine a counsellor that comes to school once In a week, this has just depicts the bad state of secondary school education in our country.

3. Symposia and Inaugural lectures should be organized for students to raise awareness about this bad habits and the consequences of this should be highlighted to them.

4. The learning of child abuse and topics related to it should be fully incorporated in the school curriculum.

I am calling on our legislators, executives and our independent judiciary to do something about this before it can't be controlled.

Conclusively, I am an advocate against all bad vices that will truncate the destinies of this country's future.

Very common but until justice is served it will continue.

Parents too should be bold to go to school and report such acts known to them and followup until justice is served
