When we talk about old flames, we literally do not mean old fires but a previous girlfriend or boyfriend; a former romantic partner, especially one for whom one still has romantic feelings. Succinctly, it refers to a former love interest.

It has been argued that old flames has become the bane of marriages, which had caused distrust and in most cases divorce. In some quarters, it is believed that old flames can never be quenched despite the individuals martial status or age. Once the opportunity shows itself, the fire is rekindled.

There's nothing like "old flames never die". The world is filled with adulterers and fornicators hence they coined that phrase to deceive themselves.
