@poster

there cant be a best programmer not only on nairaland but world wide, programmers are of different dimensions and categories, in different fields. so you cant get what u are looking for.

I've been watching this thread for a while, hoping it won't result in an exchange of insults.
@poster I think you've spent too much time here that you've run out of questions. Its just like saying "who is the best instrumentalist in Nigeria?"
How would you compare a bass guitarist to a saxophonist? The same way, you can't compare a web programmer to a desktop programmer. In fact, you can't even compare desktop programmers. There are people who have never written a single line of GUI code and yet, they are gurus. While, some people create really filthy-rich clients yet they have zero knowledge of network programming.
Even TopCoder is not really a good way of measuring a programmer's ability just as an aptitude test is not the best way to test who the best chemical engineer in Nigeria is. Have you ever seen a problem on TopCoder that requires you to use RMI, Java Mail API, JAI, Java 3D? No!
If you ask "who is the best at a particular technology/API/framework?" that's still okay but you asking who the best programmer on Nairaland is, you won't get an answer. A good question often points to its own answer.

I didn't expect this thread to get as much attention as it did.

@poster:
If u are a programmer, then get busy with something meaningful and not threads like this. Naija is developing and we need creativity not noise, if u r not a programmer, then go find the best in your own field and leave programmers alone. Biko!

well, I too thought the same but it's funny how these threads evolve when given some time. there has been some interesting contributions and points as a result of this "trivial" question and i'd say it's all for the good. that it's getting this much attention is symptom of the degree of knowledge of programming that we have generally.

but to address the question, it is not enough to ask who is the best programmer, you must define a criteria to judge a person's work. r u judging in terms of efficiency? flexibility? robustness? dependability? etc. u must be specific on what objectives u want a program to achieve.

Why not do it this way - if you think u deserve the title
Mention 1 of your efforts that is in use by a large international corporation or on Blackberry phones locally and internationally.

Let us review based on commercial value not intelligent coding, there are too many geniuses here so that would be a weak standard. wink

u can't judge based on commercial value. products tend to sell well because they'd been marketed\ advertised well, not b'cos of superior quality.
