Weapons originating from the conflict zone in Ukraine are contributing to the violence and threat of terrorism, like Boko Haram, in Africa’s Sahel region and Nigeria, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has told a meeting of regional leaders.

Buhari mentioned intra-continental arms flows during a speech in which he described the challenges faced by Nigeria and the other five members of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC).

The Libyan conflict and NATO intervention of 2011 that toppled the government of strongman Muammar Gaddafi resulted in a large amount of weapons from the country's stockpiles spreading throughout the Sahel. Libya has remained torn between warring factions for more than a decade.

So far, however, western governments have largely refused to take the advice seriously.
