After the germination of the seed the first insecticide spraying should occur not more than 5days. This boost the seedling growth and deter early insect attack which hinder adequate growth of the plant. I use vanguish insecticide which contains acetamiprid and cypermethrin and is very effective.

To get a bumper harvest ensure weeds do not compete with your Okro plants. Unlike tomato which herbicide cannot be used for control spraying we use glyphosate herbicide to control weeds in Okro as long as you spray carefully.
Re: Diary Of An Okro Farmer by Jub101(m): 12:49am On Dec 15, 2022
If you are using the same knapsack sprayer to spray insecticide and also for herbicide please ensure you wash the sprayer thoroughly anytime you’re to apply insecticide on the farm. I know farmers who got wrecked just through this alone.

This is a lady finger. It looks very good because:
1. There is no competition with other plant and lady finger are very vigorous in growth
2. The soil must be very good to support this kind of growth but mind you if your Okro is just full of leaves I don’t think it will produce Okro very much and that’s why you need to know when to apply fertilizer and when not too!
Re: Diary Of An Okro Farmer by markkyony(m): 2:53pm On Dec 15, 2022
Where can we get the lady finger seeds?
Can we also plant fresh seeds?
Re: Diary Of An Okro Farmer by Jub101(m): 10:10pm On Dec 15, 2022
No you can’t plant the fresh seed. I do sell but harvesting of the dry Okro pod as not commenced and it will actually undergo some processes before it will be ready for planting like shelling of Okro pod and sorting out bad seeds.

Ok thanks
Re: Diary Of An Okro Farmer by Jub101(m): 7:55am On Dec 17, 2022
The fertilizer application in Okro depends on your soil composition if the soil is rich with nutrients you will apply just once and that will be at 45 days after planting but if the soil is deficient two times application will have to be done

The first application will be btw 20-30 days after planting and NPK 20:10:10 should be used

The second application will be btw 45-50 days after planting this is to lengthen the life span of the plant and produce pods vigorously. Urea fertilizer should be used
Re: Diary Of An Okro Farmer by Jub101(m): 8:00am On Dec 17, 2022
For a one time application use only NPK 20:10:10

Good morning and weldone sir.
Why do you prefer a higher nitrogen fertilizer for your okro?
Why using urea during fruiting stage??
Re: Diary Of An Okro Farmer by Omo9ja147(m): 10:23pm On Dec 17, 2022
Jub101:
Herbicide containing glyphosate should be used with dimethyl amine (popularly know as 2-4D) in the ratio 200ml to 50ml respectively in a 20L knapsack sprayer.
y are u mixing glyphosate and 2,4_D

Okro unlike tomato produces pod as it grows so the leaves needs to be maintained which is why we use urea based fertilizer. The overall type of fertilizer use is actually dependent on your soil so you need to do soil test to know how to go about it

So as for the herbicide to work more efficiently and kill all weeds irrespective of their type.

Planting of Okro begins for me immediately after the end of harmattan most likely in the mid of February as I am located in Iwo Osun state south west this February planting is for those who have water logged area or those that can irrigate their farms before the onset of rain.
Can't this crop be cultivated throughout the year? undecided

Jub101:
Use imiforce insecticide as white fly is the main insect that disturbs a lot during this period. 25ml in 20L knapsack sprayer is good
.
I think it is best to start with the lowest recommended dosage of 0.25ml per L. If that doesn't work effectively, the farmer can gradually increase it to maximum recommended dossage of 0.5ml per L.
.
From my experience, you will need less pesticide if you water the plants very well and fertilize well.

My side is once every 4 days bc of pest pressure.

I won't even advice using 1 sprayer oo. Too risky. Every farmer shud have 2.

Paraquat is what I use. It is safer and effective. Plants' roots can absorb glyphosate.

The reason why you can’t use Paraguay is because it burns the stem of the plant and disrupt the flow of nutrient from the root also when the plant starts producing pod due to the burn on the stem is breaks off at the spot of contact with paraquat. Am talking from my personal experience sir
Re: Diary Of An Okro Farmer by Jub101(m): 9:27am On Dec 20, 2022
The only time we use paraquat is when harvesting as commenced up to half and the stem of the Okro plant as matured that paraquat cannot have effect on the plant stem anymore.

It can sir but the harmattan period affects the production of pod. During this period production is very little as the pod drys off before it becomes Okro.
Re: Diary Of An Okro Farmer by Jub101(m): 9:33am On Dec 20, 2022
And seeds do not also germinate during this period and even when they do growth is very stunted.
