Beyond The Condemnation Of UN House Bomb Attack!‏ -Femi Falana

We join the government and people of Nigeria in condemning the bombing of the United Nations Building in Abuja last Friday. We also sympathize with the bereaved families of the deceased and others who were injured in the dastardly attack.

It is a national shame that some of the injured survivors have to be flown abroad for treatment since the National Hospital in Abuja is ill equipped to treat them . After 12 years in power the peoples democratic party led federal government should explain what has happened to all the funds allocated for the refurbishment of the National Hospital that it has no pint of blood in its bank.

However, beyond condemnations Nigerians should take the bomb blast as a challenge to protect themselves since President Goodluck Jonathan has confessed that he himself is not safe! Since Nigerians have become cheap targets in the hands of assassins, kidnappers, armed robbers and terrorists the National Assembly should as a matter of urgency comply with section 220 of the Constitution which states that "The Federation shall establish and maintain adequate facilities for carrying into effect any Act of the National Assembly providing for compulsory military training or military service for citizens of Nigeria".

Am not holding brief for the government cos least i expected them is to be sincere. Didn't MEND sent a warning before attacking on the independent day celebrations? They even went to the extent of giving the time of events and precise location, yet the bomb went off embarassed sad.

I tire oooo.

i am not GEJs supporter and will probably never be with the way the mumu is running things but this statement and its timing is suspicious, why would this kind out of statement come out now? this oyinbo people wey una de happy say dem don arrive na dem go kill all of us slowly but surely for what is under ground, i use to thing it was jonny and his people doing all this bombing but now i am starting to believe its the west which is why our security agencies are not upto the task. and think about i,t even armed robber no fit stay invisible for this long!!

they are here to create division and then later turn us against the government which is the only reason i can think of for making such a statement.

Once again, it is very obvious that our police needs complete and sufficient reforming and transforming. This is the real challenge. Look at our police officers, are they matching on any scale their counterparts in the civilized countries

PointB:

This is one of the few occasions I have to agree with you.

The UN claim that they warned Nigeria of 'General Threat' is stewpid, silly, and very malicious if you asked me. What was the 'general' threat a month ago? Every Tom. Joystick and Harry, can conjure up 'general' threat.  Now let me conjure up some general threats:

-  Militants will attack a high profile target (person, building, government, clergy?) in the NW
-  Islamist fundamentalist are attempting to infiltrate very high profile government building (have they not been trying for ages)
-  Al Qeada linked terrorist are planning to hijack public transport in the country (airplane, buses, train, taxi, private jet, okadas, ferries, which one?)
-  Hackvist plan to attack a major online forum in Sub Sahara Africa (Nairaland, ghanaweb please take note)
- Al Shabab based terrorist group plan to attack a major target in Sub Sahara Africa (Ghana, Nigeria, ECOWAS)
- A new Libyan based terror group targets high profile target outside of Libya. (Africa, Middle East, Nigeria, US)

Friends, forumist, Nairalanders, the above are samples of 'general' threat - from my crystal ball  grin grin grin. You can see the nature of 'general' threat - they are non specific, non-actionable security information.  UN should have done better with the kind of resources they have, they should have provided a more specific threat if they think they know better. My opinion is that even the UN is as clueless as they come. They are just trying to cover their own intelligence failure, and blame it on the usual suspect  - Nigeria in general, GEJ specifically.

This is one hell of a time for Nigerians and GEJ. I wouldn't want to be president at this rate!  grin grin grin grin grin

Thank PointB for being that classy. Those blaming d govt can go ahead and do so. Nigerian security system has failed and as such must be blamed for what no man on earth can prevent. It's horrible d way we think!

The UN should please shut-up! They are part of the present trouble that is flogging this country.

Did they not see and approve the sham and shame of an election by stating and approving that the election was free and fair?

Someone a page back mentioned something about wanting the Us to go and set an army base in naija.

First of all, let's just say that our ears should be on the ground and our eyes looking for covered footprints after we see what happened in iraq, egypt, etc.
All these US military bases all over the place out of "neccessity". I dunno man.

I agree with Femi Falana on this. If the government can't protect us, they should empower us to protect ourselves.
