Ocean surge sacks over 1000 residents in Lagos •Govt raises alarm
By OLUWOLE FAROTIMI

Sunday, August 28, 2011
Following fresh ocean surge that rendered over 1,000 Lagos residents homeless, Lagos State government has urged the Federal Government to come to its aid.The call, Lagos government said, had become necessary to avert more loss of lives and property.

Addressing journalists on Saturday at the Alpha Beach, Lagos State Commissioner for Waterfront and Infrastructure, Prince Segun Oniru, and his counterpart at the Ministry for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, decried delay by the Federal Government to come to the state government’s aid.

Oniru particularly blamed the recent disaster on the neglect by the Federal Government, saying the disaster would have been averted if the Federal Government had lived up to its pledge and responded promptly to help the state government on the ocean surge problem.

According to him, “you will recall that we came here about three months ago with President Goodluck Jonathan to show him the enormity of the ecological disaster looming on the waterfront. From that time till now we have lost about 10 metres of land to the ocean surge and people’s lives and properties are constantly being threatened.

“What we need here is permanent solution to the problem, like we did on the Bar Beach. That is why you see the whole of Ahmadu Bello Way not flooded. This problem is not a Lagos problem, it is a national problem. The Federal Government should come to the aid of the state government. Huge amount of money is required to bring about a permanent solution and the state government cannot finance this alone,” he said.

The commissioner lamented that the abrupt shut down of beaches in the state as a result of the surge had paralyzed tourism activities.

He said the insinuation that the surge was caused by the Eko Atlantic City building in Lagos Atlantic zone was wrong, saying “the problem is a global problem. The construction cannot cause ocean surge. It is the ripple effect of the hurricane in the Caribbean.”

Corroborating his colleague’s view, the Lagos Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, said the state government was disturbed to see Lagos residents reduced to refugees in their own country.

He observed that apart from becoming refugees, the people’s means of livelihood had been destroyed, and thus pleaded with the Federal Government and well-meaning Nigerians to come to the victims’ aid.

Are we waiting for this ocean to swallow the whole Lagos Island before FG can respond?. I pity people who invest heavily there. 10 meters of land lost is big and at this rate, there will be no more Ikoyi in 50 years time.

Lagos loses another 10 metres of land to ocean surge
on AUGUST 29, 2011 · in NEWS
By Olasunkanmi Akon & Monsur Olowoopejoi

LAGOS —THE Lagos State Government has said it had lost over 10 metres of land to the ocean surge. This came as residents of Maiyegun community and Alpha Beach in Eti-Osa Local Government Area of state have called on Federal Government to urgently release ecological fund to the state to address the problem.

State Commissioner for Water Front and Infrastructure, Mr. Adesegun Oniru, who spoke after inspecting the damage by the ocean surge, weekend, stressed the need for the Federal Government to find lasting solution to the problem, in order to protect the surrounding communities.

According to Oniru, who was accompanied by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello during the environment sanitation exercise, “if the Federal Government fails to respond to the problem, more metres would be lost in the next few days. That means we are giving nature the opportunity to redefine the boundary of the nation, because for now, a very significant portion of the land at the beach had been overtaken by the Atlantic Ocean, eating up pathways and damaging buildings and stalls.”

I guess Madam Goodluck Jona is too busy with some other things in Aso rock. For those of you who voted for jona and not PDP, over to you.

This country called Nigeria is too much for JONA the fisherman to preside over. SIMPLE!

-UN bombing, BokoHaram
-Jos Crisis , Boko Haram
-Police HQ bombing
-Oct 1st bombing
-NO electricity
-No good Roads
-No employments
-Ecological Issue
and many many many more,

JONA is busy receiving Guests at Aso rock, making empty talks, sacking noone in the security circle,,

JONA can be best described as GUTLESS PRESIDENT WITH NO VISION, a confused leader with no direction.

The Earlier he wakes up from Mr FirstLady 's wrapper, the Better for him and the country.

The problem in Lagos is a Lagos state problem. It isn't the FG's business, if the FG does help it would only be out of kindness; Lagos state has a governor.

Bull, that means problems that emanate from Borno or Imo should be their problem. This is a natural disaster and can be controlled. Tinubu tried his best to control the ocean but it seems the FG needs to put in more resources to control the surge.

With this ocean surge, is the Eko Atlantic project a reality or are the promoters swimming against the river?.

Exactly.
If their governors aren't up to the task, they might as well resign. The FG can help since it has the money, but it surely isn't its duty or its business.

Swimm against the river is an understatement, they are swimming against ocean tides, ocean waves, rising tides, etc. Imagine what lagos would have been if the money sink into the Atlantic is used to develop the larger expanse of land between Ikorodu and Epe

It's the other way around. Eko Atlantic was designed to solve this particular problem.

I dont even thing the money exist with the FG, with the amount of national problems at hand,
in the past so much money has been spent on Lagos, by now we should be reaping the dividends of those monies and not be entertaining request for more money

You have so much to say about Eko Atlantic, but you know nothing about the project. It beats me why people comment about and criticize what the know nothing about. How do we learn if all we have is lack of knowledge?

You do have google in front of you, look up Eko Atlantic and it's benefits before your next post.

Yours is the generic lack of basic public administrative knowledge. Where do you suggest the money for schools and the other stuff you mentioned come from? More taxes? Airports and other economic activities expands the states tax base and bank accounts. At the end of the day, these activities allows the state to spend the same money on the things you mentioned. It's the other way around.

Btw, this is not about your precious GEJ, let him worry about the simple task of securing nigerians by taking care of boko haram.

I don't even know how some of you get to label everything missplaced priority. Eko Atlantic is not a state project it's privately funded

I asked you a simple question and you are getting emotional, I am sure you are benefiting from the project one way or the other. The question again, is the Eko Atlantic city going to protect th huge coast line against rising sea levels, stronger ocean currents caused by global warming?

This is an issue affecting the national coastline. The federal Government MUST come to the aid of Lagos State. You're taking your sycophancy too far.

You were not just asking questions, you were making general statements and criticizing what you know nothing about. I asked you to do the most basic thing which is making use of google to educate yoursel, I did the same thing and I do believe you can do it too.
Re: Ocean Surge Sacks 1000: Lagos Begs FG For Financial Aid by wirinet(m): 4:09pm On Aug 31, 2011
Why Lagos? Is it only Lagos that is being bedeviled by erosion? The whole southern coast line has serious erosion problems. What about dessert encroachment afflicting the northern states not to talk of gully erosion in the east. I think Lagos is behaving like a spoily kid out of 36, I lived close to bar beach for close to 20 years and p know the billions of Naira the FG spends every 3 years on bar beach just to reclaim the beach. Since the Lagos State government boasts that the Atlantic projectsl would protect the coastline from erosion, why do they need federal help. P think Lagos and Abuja feels all of Nigerias money should be spent on them to the detriment of other states.

Stop being silly.
It is not the duty of the FG to save the Lagos coastline; afterall every other state has problems. The FG can pitch in for humanitarian reasons, but not because governing Lagos is part of its remit.
