Police can ask for your drivers license to ensure you are not a criminal, and to ensure public safety on the roads. Driver's license is a form of identification on the road.

They might be looking for someone or trying to solve a crime, it's simply to identify yourself on the road, anywhere in the world if officer stops you, they can ask for license and registration, to be sure the vehicle is not a stolen vehicle and to check for identification. This is basic, Nigerians una complain too much, but want a safe society. Why worry if you have nothing to hide?
