Pope Benedict XVI now lies in state in the home chapel of his post-retirement residence, the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican. From tomorrow, his body will lie in state at St. Peter’s Basilica, for the faithful to pay their last respects. Of note is the candle burning next to him, depicting Our Lady of Altotting, the Marian shrine he loved so much in his native Bavaria, Germany. On January 5th, Pope Benedict will be buried by Pope Francis, with a simple ceremony in keeping with the wishes of the deceased pontiff.
