Federal Government plans 3 coal-fired power stations to generate 3,000Megawatts The Federal Government is to build three coal-fired power stations in Enugu, Kogi and Gombe states with the capacity to generate 3,000Megawatts, so as to diversify electricity sources in the country. Minister of Power, Professor Bart Nnaji, disclosed the Federal Government’s new energy mix, yesterday, at a briefing organised by the Federal Ministry of Information to mark the first 100 days of the President Goodluck Jonathan administration. He said: “Not only does Nigeria have huge coal deposits in Enugu, Kogi, Gombe and Benue states, but we have the world’s cleanest type of coal.” Though the government is spearheading the establishment of the new power stations, it was learnt that it will not own them outright, in line with the ongoing power sector reform. The Federal Government will have about 25 per cent with state governments and private sector companies owning the rest of the coal-fired companies which may take about four years to complete. On whether the Ministry of Power will revive the Oji River coal-powered generating station in Enugu State which was destroyed during the Nigerian Civil War, Prof. Nnaji said the dilapidated station was obsolete and produced a mere 35MW “which might have been appropriated for an era when many communities did not have electricity and when neither the population nor the economic activity in the country was as high as it is today.” Nnaji disagreed with suggestion that the country could face criticism from the international community over coal-powered stations because of the environmental implications. United States and South Africa, he noted, produce more electricity from coal than from any other source. He said: “We do not expect the international community, including environmental groups, to display double standards so glaringly against us. In any case, ours is clean coal, far better than what obtains in many parts of the world, especially Europe.” Coal from Enugu and Benue, in particular, has low ash and is of high calorific value while that of Kogi is friable, or easy to use to form smokeless coal bricket. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/09/fg-plans-3-coal-fired-power-stations/ |

Good to hear about the renewed efforts being made in the Power Sector. Does anyone know how long it takes to build a Coal-fired Power Station? |

^Good question so we know when to start expecting the additional 3MW. |

Good one BUT when every nation is going nuclear and green, why coal fired power plants in 2011? |

Kobojunkie: Thanks for the links Minaj Holdings Limited had applied for licence to generate a total capacity of 115mw to be sited at Agu-Amorji Nike in Enugu-East Local Government area of Enugu State. So we are looking at a lead time of less than 2 years for at least 2 of the coal-fired Power Stations. Still do not see where the 3000 Megawatts are coming from though. The plants will be located in Odu and Abocho Kogi State and will utilise coal from nearby Okaba and Ogbogbo coal mines where the company has concessions |

Kx: In reality its only the U.S.A. and "smaller" nations like demark, france and iceland that are going green. The rest of the world are still building coal power plants. Russia, China, India, Brazil, mexico, South africa etc are still building coal power plants. As a matter of fact 77% of South Africa's energy needs are directly derived from coal and they are still constructing more coal power plants as we speak. Another fun fact is that south africa's largest power station, the Kendal (Coal) Power Station [4,110MW], Produces more electricity than the entire nation grid of Nigeria [3,600 peak]. Nigeria, Like the rest of the world need cheap energy. Why spend double, triple or even quadruple the price when you can get the same electricity cheap from coal. |

What is the completion date - - Cause that is the crucial part of the project - Without a completion date -abeg throw this one into the heap of failed promises - Remember GEJ proposed to build airports in every state |

I thought they were privatizing the bloody thing, why are they still building more plants, why are they spending our money to build new ones instead of selling the whole bloody thing off or have they changed their minds. |

If we are to go by all the "FG plans , To boost electricity" we should be generating at least 1million mega watts by now. Besides even if they do generate,it doesnt end there, there is still the problem of distribution. Bart Nnaji was once minister for science and technology and if i remember correctly,he was widely criticised for attempting impossibilities which ended up wasting taxpayers money and achieving nothing.lets hope this his second missionary journey is better |

there no coal mines working at the moment. the ones that were have all been shut down a while ago, ressurecting them and having them fire power plants will take at least 5 years plus going by the so called breath of fresh air. if you ask me its just an anouncement to make it look like gej is working. we know better. |

This should have been done sooner. Obasanjo & Yar' Adua were vision-less. They should build 30 or 50 more afterwards and forget about debt temporarily. And they should get moving on exploiting the natural gas involved in their much touted "master plan" as well. With proper coal and natural gas exploitation, Nigeria shouldn't go a day or an hour without electricity. |

I think this is another Money diversion strategy. The FG has initiated alot of things with no conclusion because the funds for such projects will later be diverted to private pockets. The ones championing the the 3 Coal-fired Power Stations are still the ones importing generators. I laff Nigeria, I laff big big laff |

Nigeria presently has 28000 uncompleted projects - Projects where mobilisation fee mostly half of the cost of project will have been collected upfront. |

@hercules07 Many of these global companies corrupt elected officials into using taxpayer money to fund the costs and risk of the project but reap the benefits and profits. This shared ownership deal with these plants reeks to the high heavens. Cloudy Germany now gets approximately 20% of their energy needs from solar power. |

Re: Federal Government Plans 3 Coal-fired Power Stations To Generate 3,000 Megawatts by Nobody: 5:32pm On Sep 07, 2011 |
Just as they have built gas-fired power stations with no gas to power them and left them to rot, they now want put to put the cart before the horse and build coal-fired power stations with no functional coal mine in Nigeria. Who will mine the coal that will serve as feed-stock to those plants? How will the coal be transported when there are no rail lines serving non existent coal mines? Can our incompetent parastatals do the above or international companies with financial muscle and technical expertise such as Rio Tinto or BHP Billiton? This is a white elephant and an avenue to siphon tax payer funds. Oji river coal fired power plant has been dead for decades since the government does not have the capacity to run it. Now they want to build new ones. |
Re: Federal Government Plans 3 Coal-fired Power Stations To Generate 3,000 Megawatts by 76Naira(m): 5:38pm On Sep 07, 2011 |
Why are we talking coal in 2011? Even when we really need the extra power. Is it hard for them to know we will do better faster with gas? We have enough existing gas resources to just plug in power plants to. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_natural_gas_proven_reserves. How much of the coal mining resource is existing? How long will it take to come on stream? We still dey last sha, No need to invent, just buy & start & e still dey hard us. |

76Naira: What the govt is trying to do is not that bad, i believe it is called diversification. I don't think there is any one country that generates all its energy need from just one source. |
Re: Federal Government Plans 3 Coal-fired Power Stations To Generate 3,000 Megawatts by denitro(m): 6:07pm On Sep 07, 2011 |
Good news - but 5000Mw would have been better Because we know that in few years to come 1 or 2 of the stations will be faulty or repair parts will be subtitled in chinese, So 5 power plants if 2 go bad, we are still left with 3 = 3000Mw |
