Egypt is leaving no stone unturned as the country prepares to make an official bid for the 2026 Olympic Games and 2030 World Cup joint bid with Saudi Arabia and Greece. The country’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) says “it is time for Africa” because it tries to grow to be the primary nation on the continent to host the Olympic Games. The Egyptian official confirmed that authorities were “currently working on preparing a comprehensive file in this regard to be submitted along with the proposed request” to the IOC. The ongoing construction of facilities in the Olympics Village is at the rate of 90% of completion. IOC President Thomas Bach has previously spoken of his determination to see African nations bid to host the Games as it remains the only populated continent not to have hosted an Olympics. Ashraf Sobhy, the Egyptian Sports Minister, said during a reception for Bach in Cairo that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has given his approval to submit a formal application to host the major sporting event. The 90,000 Capacity Stadium in the Olympics village Sobhy said he had held a recent meeting with Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa President Mustapha Berraf, claiming that Berraf “confirmed the union’s keenness and support for Egypt to host the Olympic Games scheduled for 2036”. Cairo International Stadium and other facilities Work is currently underway to build a multi-million-dollar sports complex, called the Egypt International Olympic City, in the new administrative capital, located 45 kilometres east of Cairo. The project is expected to feature a 90,000-seat stadium, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis courts and an indoor venue. Sobhy believes the new development will boost Egypt’s ambition but admitted that officials will still be assessing technical, logistical and financial aspects before submitting an official request to the IOC. As well as Egypt, officials in India, Mexico Spain, and Turkey have all expressed an interest in bidding for the 2036 Olympic Games. Cape Town in South Africa was the last African city to bid for the Olympics as it lost out to the Greek capital Athens for the 2004 Games, finishing third out of five bidders in the poll in 1997. South Africa has also been previously mooted as a possible host for the Olympics in 2024 and 2028 but no bid was tabled. Senegal is set to become the first African country to stage the Youth Olympic Games when Dakar plays host in 2026 If successful with its bid, Egypt would become the first African or Arab nation to host the Olympics. The Egyptians have bid for 3 earlier Olympics (1916, 1938 and 2008), with South Africa – in 2004 – the one different African nation to have additionally tried. The subsequent three summer season Games are scheduled to be in Paris in 2024, Los Angeles in 2028 and Brisbane in 2032. Also, Egypt is considering making a joint bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup along with Saudi Arabia and Greece. The governments of all three countries have given the green light to push on with the application process for what would be the second winter staging of the World Cup after Qatar this year. Most of the costs will be borne by the Saudis, with the majority of matches staged in their country.
