With the level of under development in the country Nigeria should not be pledging this huge amount of money.
I see this as an avenue by some people to commit big scale looting.

It surprises me to say of we youths nowadays are very myopic in our views and it is not going to help us that much! We rant about anything and what we don't have understanding of yet conclude it is the right thing to do. This money is pledged for poorer nations. There is no excuse in the idea because we have issues at home this pledge must be terminated - it doesn't work like that. If it were to be like that the millions of dollars we receive as aid from abroad can also be terminated due to the fact that those countries given them out to us have issues. There is no country on earth without issues. There are time these pledges are made and not meant on time but it will be accrued to balances of accounts. Japan still facing disasters of earthquake, typhoon and other natural disasters that ravaged the nation still gives out without given such excuse as having problem at home.

This aid money is not Nigerian problem but the inability of the fed. to create enabling environment to create jobs for the unemployed, incentive for foreign investments, get rid of corruptions, provision of basic infrastructure, etc. The money is there but to make proper use of it for the good of the people and nation is the major issue - not given of aid!

It is better to give than to receive. Blessed is the hand that gives than that that receives.

Come on! Don't they know that before even pledging the money! The money has been there. You should ask yourself, is money the reason why they didn't provide clean water for riverine states?

You've said it all, majority of youths and so called educated individuals are not but full 0f emptiness, most are so emotionally irrational in their response to issues. The US with a debt of over 2 trillion dollars still donates to all countries and community the world over, also with their high unemployement rate is still giving out visas as lottery to so many people. Greece with their economic probl;ems so serious that its affecting EU is still giving out scholarships worth 4million naira each to( at the last count ( three weeks ago) 42 Nigerians yearly . excluding other third world countries oo. We are talking of improving our international relevance and influence and some immature are raving , ranting and cursing, for God's sake, what kind of future are we going to have in this country with shallow minded puerile and myopic literates most of who parade self on NL.

Re: Nigeria To Assist Poor Countries With N7bn! by 2mch(m): 3:25pm On Sep 08, 2011
WOW!!! i didnt know it could get even dumber. Nigerian's can hardly eat and are surviving on N18,000 minimum wage. So many people suffering. We lack light, schools, hospitals, roads, jobs. But we have the mind to go and try to alleviate other people's problems who are definitely better off than Nigeria. Where is the HOS and the Senate? . Even Somalia and Rwanda have light. WTF?!

My take is this, OPEC is an institution with Nigeria as a member. If somewhere along they line they decided to set aside some fund to assist some poorer countries then it is necessary that Nigeria contributes it qouta. It it note worthy to point out that OPEC countries are inclined to be well off than non OPEC countries especially in middle/low income countries (it is a pity that our case is different due to the general nature of misappropiation of funds that is common to our public servants), should Nigeria contribute their qouta towards this fund? YES, lets us not assume that by doing this moni don finish for this country, there are soooooo many avenues to generate fund but our leaders are making do with it for their personal benefits, that is why there will always be lenders and borrowers, debtors and creditors, until we learn to invest appropiately, we will lack and still do our duties for belonging to "well off" bodies/organisations

We made a pledge to donate that money; so we should honor this obligation. Every nation does it. This is why we are part of the global family

People are shouting that we should not give the money instead of confronting the leaders that pauperized the average man. na wa for Naija

Minister of National Planning recently announced that Nigeria earned N3.5 trillion in the last 6 months yet people are groaning over N7 billion (less than  1 percent) to help the less privileged. Seems we have no compassion in this country.

Mtcheww people are suffering and dying from poverty and hunger, we don't have electricity, good schools, world class healthcare, or even open avenues for employment yet he's going to help other countries that don't even give a flying Bleep about us, this man is not doing anything for this country, he's just taking extra space. He needs to wake up and smell the coffee because it looks like he's not going to be in office for the whole 4 years.

Lets give because we dnt knw 2moro even USA wt the unemployment issues in their country are still granting immigrant visas to poor countries.

Africans like you are the reason we are so backwards. Your naivety is impeccable. USA gives NOTHING free. They are granting immigrants visas so that they can help run power the economy. Ever wondered why they dont deport Mexicans? Well the answer is simple. Willingness to do unimaginably CHEAP labour.

Back to the issue on ground. I still maintain my stance. Yes, I know it is a pledge we made back in the past but I just dont think this is the perfect time to redeem the pledge. It is common business ethics that you pay yourself first before paying anyone else. Just saying. . . .

It's a kind gesture to consider the poor or poor countries and help them. But our Govt must not fail to know that we have a lot of poor people, poor road network, poor power supply and poor infrastructures asking for attention.Nigeria for now, should focus her concern internally in building our country economically, socially, politically etc Our resources should be channeled to making sure we have an enabling environment for economic growth, and security for both the citizenry and strangers.
