As part of the measures being put in place by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), towards repositioning the transportation sector of the FCT, the administration, is considering licensing six companies, to manage the taxi sub-sector of the territory. Minister of the FCT, Senator Bala Mohammed, who dropped the hint, said, this is in a bid to bring sanity to the city’s transport sector. The minister disclosed that, the administration is putting final touches to the new transportation agreement, that would usher in credible route concessionaires, to manage the sector. He said that, in the new arrangement, the government may provide subsidy to the operators, to enable the common man enjoy low transportation fare in the FCT. Peoples Daily recalls that, the FCT transportation sector had, of late, witnessed series of challenges, which has rendered it services, inefficient and insufficient, to serve the need of the teeming residents in the territory. It would be recalled that, the London Taxi Scheme, of the administration, which had been managed by the Abuja Leasing Company (ALC), was late last year, scrapped by the administration, as it failed to meet up with its requirement. Also, the transportation agreement, signed with some companies, contracted to manage the Abuja Urban Mass Transit, which terminated last year, was not renewed by the administration, leaving the teeming residents of the FCT, at the mercy of the Abuja green bus and taxi operator, who are accustomed to charging exorbitant fares. The decision of the administration, not to renew the agreement was not unconnected with the failure of the companies to achieve the objectives of the contract, which includes provision of affordable, efficient and sufficient transportation services to FCT residents. http://www.peoplesdaily-online.com/news/abuja-metro-news/5616-fcta-to-license-six-firms-to-run-taxi-sub-sector |

Idiotic. So all the private taxi-cab operators should do what? Go and commit suicide or go elsewhere? This is dumb. |
