Why Is Turkey So Prone To Earthquakes? by innotutorial(m): 11:52am On Feb 07, 2023 |
Turkey is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world due to its location at the meeting point of two major tectonic plates: the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate. The movement of these plates creates tremendous pressure which is released as earthquakes. Additionally, Turkey is also home to several active fault lines, including the North Anatolian Fault, which has produced some of the most devastating earthquakes in recent history. The recent 7.8 magnitude quake, which struck southeast Turkey and northern Syria, was the largest in decades. At 4:17am local time on Monday, February 2023, the earthquake hit near Gaziantep, causing widespread destruction and claiming the lives of over 2,300 people and injuring thousands more. The quake was followed by numerous aftershocks, including a 7.5-magnitude quake in the same region. Turkey is situated at the intersection of three major tectonic plates, which makes it highly susceptible to earthquakes. These land masses, which make up the Earth's outer shell, are always moving and colliding with each other and Earthquakes commonly occur at the plate's fault lines. These plate fault lines are large cracks on the planet's surface. Most part of Turkey lies on the Anatolian plate, which is situated between the Eurasian and African plates, and a minor plate called the Arabian plate. When these plates are pushed against and under each other, they can get "stuck" due to friction. When these plates finally get "unstuck," the release of a vast amount of energy is felt in the form of earthquakes or tsunamis when the tectonic plates converge underwater. This geological activity highlights Turkey's vulnerability to the power of earthquakes and the importance of being prepared for potential disasters." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19XMTibkoxE 1 Like 1 Share
