Please Help: Extreme Fuel Consumption On Acura MDX With 2007 With 145,000 Miles by NUJABEZ: 10:42am On Feb 10, 2023
I recently bought a Tokunbo Acura MDX 2007. Given its rated fuel efficiency of 15mpg for city driving, I analysed my movement and thought it was okay and that I could shoulder the fueling expenses.

However, my issue now is that I don't get up to 5mpg. I filled my tank yesterday, 88 liters to fill, drove to Yaba, Victoria Island, Ajah, and back to Ikeja, a journey of 130 kilometres and the fuel has run out.

Given the 15mpg rating, I should still have more than a third of the tank or at least half, but the tank is empty.

I have to refuel every two to three days and it's not sustainable.

Please I need suggestions on what to do. The car hasn't been serviced except for oil and filter change, brakes and tires. Why is the vehicle consuming too much petrol?

Why not scan the car and save yourself the guesswork?

Acura MDX are notorious gas guzzlers.
Yours is even the 3.7L engine type .
Just suck it up or stop using the AC.
MDX is perfect for long distance driving like Lagos to Benin or Ogbomosho etc .
Intra city driving.... You'll hate MDX.
I have the 05 model with 3.5L engine .
Similar story tho not too excessive like yours.

88 liters of fuel in 79.5 litre tank capacity and you didn't get there on empty tank. Our fuel stations are useless.

Scan that car first. Start by checking your dashboard mpg to see the figure it shows. Then that will give you a benchmark before u scan for codes. That dashboard mpg is very vital.

130kms or miles?
Unless yours is candian, mdx odometer is calibrated in miles.

Now here are a few things to do.
1. Make sure none of your brakes are binding. Check by feeling your brake discs after about 30 minutes of driving. If any is too hot to touch, then that's the culprit.
2. Check your alignment..make sure it's set up properly
3. Keep off the go pedal. The mdx moves. It moves. Most owners are often tempted to stomp on that accelerator whenever there is a space in front of them. Resist that urge. It's a 3.7 liter V6 pulling more that 2 tons of weight. So it will burn quite some fuel to get going.
Keep your rpms below 2200. Gear changes occur at this rpm during normal driving.
Resist the temptation to stomp the pedal.
4. Learn to cost to stops rather than braking late and hard. Coasting to stops saves fuel. Stomping on the brake pedal wastes fuel.
5. Scan your car and fix the issues surrounding emissions. Tune up the car. Check your injectors for abnormal spray or stuck open conditions. Replace spark plugs if worn. Replace coils if bad.

I believe if you do all this, you will be fine.

The worst mpg I ever got with mine is 12mpg and that caused by Lagos traffic. I average 14mpg in Lagos traffic and 16mpg in pH traffic.

I have averaged 23mpg on a grandpa cruise on the highway( never exceeded 80km/hr) and 18mpg is usual on my travels.

A full tank usually gives me 280miles in the city and 360 miles highway.

I currently get a miserable 4 mpg. I am still looking for a certified Honda specialist, but I am thinking of just driving to Oyingbo to get it checked out .

Thanks a lot. I am actually a newbie when it comes to cars, and I don't have much time to be involved right now, but I will use these tips as a starting point when I eventually find a specialist.

Can you please refer me to your mechanic or a good service centre?

I actually meant miles, whenever I mention kilometres, I converted from miles to km first. Yes, my model is Canadian, and uses miles.

After reading your advice, I have found out just how well the MDX moves with only small acceleration. Even after braking, it still picks up speed without acceleration in two to three seconds. Thanks so much for the knowledge.

I am enjoying the car... It's a very comfortable and performant ride, only wish it didn't suck so much petrol. Hopefully I will fix that soon.

Cheers!

From this picture we can see the number 1 issue (check engine light) is on!!!
Take the car for scanning and get the codes, that will guide u appropriately.
Also u might need to check/replace your spark plugs, MAF Sensor, catalytic converter but first step go n scan the car and get the codes..

U don't need a specialist to scan your car!! Go to a rewire or mechanic and ask where u can scan your car. You can as well drive into Northwest Filling Station in vgc or any Northwest Filling Station and ask for scanner its about 5k.
After scanning your car, come back and we will discuss about a specialist

Your check engine light is on.

Take this car to Gazzuzz.

Search for his phone number here.

He will sort you out.

Don't let inexperienced hands wreck this sweet car for you at oyingbo.

Search for Gazzuzz here on Nairaland.

I called Gazzuz but he turned me down. He said he doesn't work on Acura. I am very scared of falling into the wrong hands that's why I am looking for a referral.

Contact trygo.

He is also on this platform. Radautoworks is on the island and may be a bit pricey.

Also check out autologic. He is also good.

Morning bro, I wanted to buy a car and I've been looking into Toyota Camry 2011 SE until I found the Acura MDX. I was surprised to see them cheap with cool features.

What's your suggestion should I go for it?

Your Acura MDX's fuel consumption is way below its expected efficiency. Here are some potential reasons:

Fuel System Issues: Faulty injectors, fuel pump, or a clogged fuel filter could be causing excess fuel consumption.
Engine Problems: Worn spark plugs, a dirty air filter, or a bad oxygen sensor can decrease fuel efficiency.
Driving Habits: Aggressive driving or idling too much can burn more fuel.
Tire Issues: Underinflated tires or poor alignment can increase fuel usage.
Exhaust System: A clogged catalytic converter could also be a factor.
I recommend getting a full service check to diagnose the issue.
