HOS: North-East to replace South-West *As Afolabi retires Sept 29

The South-Westgeopolitical zoneis set to lose the last major national office it is occupying to the North-East geopolitical zone as the Head of Service, Professor Oladapo Afolabi, is retiring by the end of the month.

Afolabi is the highest ranking official of the South-West origin within the federal set-up after the zone failed in its bid to produce the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The position of Head of Service though a professional one put the occupant in a very vantage position next to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation as the number one civil servant in the country.

While both North-East and the South-West zones are the most disadvantaged in the sharing of national political offices, the Nigerian Tribune findings showed that the next Head of Service will come from one of the northeastern states with Adamawa said to be highly favoured.

Already jostling for the position has commenced with permanent secretaries submitting their profiles for consideration and recommendation for elevation into the high profile post.

At the last count, it was learnt that more than seven permanent secretaries had signified their interest in the position, submissions that are reportedly been vetted by a small committee within the office of the outgoing Head of Service.

The scheming however changed last week when the long-awaited posting of federal permanent secretaries was released. Insiders noted that any permanent secretary posted to the office of the Head of Service is sure to be appointed into the coveted office.
