You have once been a secondary school or high school student, right?

As a former high school student in Africa, You must have faced one challenge or the other while trying to stay focused every single time, except you were a guru.

In present times, the pressure is even worse. Almost every high school student has a smartphone and there are so many things that could be a source of distraction, draining their motivation level.

Education is the key to a brighter future, yes, but many young students may not know how to express their difficulties in staying motivated.

Taking these into consideration, I would like to share some tips on how you can help them overcome the lack of motivation to study:

Firstly, it's important to help them set learning intentions. This is very different from setting goals. It is a smaller fragment of a goal. Are they preparing for an external examination soon? Don’t just tell them to aim to score all As.

Think about where they might be having learning difficulties. Is it with Mathematics? What topics in mathematics? How can we tackle each topic one after the other? Those are the type of questions you can ask yourself but ensure you carry the child or student along too.

Also, be a positive force or influence. Avoid criticising or belittling students for poor grades.

For parents, when you see their report cards and they fail a subject, that isn’t the right time to ask if the other person who had a better grade has “ two heads”.

Change this by letting the child understand that you believe in them and their abilities. Provide them with the support and encouragement they need to stay motivated. Sometimes a gentle push is all a child needs.

Another important tip is to create a study routine that works for them. This means finding the right time and medium to study, especially when they can concentrate with little or no distractions.

It is important to choose sustainable methods, for instance, if a child prefers to use their smartphone all day, watch Youtube, and so on. Why not introduce them to PL by edves? If your student is more drawn to pictures in books or other visuals, this is also great.

PL basically means Personalized Learning. Here, they can improve their knowledge in topics they are lagging, by learning from top schools around the world just by watching videos and whenever they feel like it. Learn more here: pl by edves

In conclusion, helping students stay motivated might be challenging but it is not impossible. By being intentional about helping them choose how to learn based on their preferences, we can empower them to overcome their difficulties and achieve academic success.
