The first Oba of Eko/Lagos was a Benin exile, Oba Ado. The Aworis were there in the 1500s, but they were hunters & fishermen who did not bother to develop an organized society or government. Lagos has always been developed by outsiders. From the Benin empire to the Portuguese, to the British who built it up as a colony on its own different from the Southern & Northern Protectorates, and finally the Nigerian government after independence. Precolonial Lagos was not built by the Yorubas, neither did they define its boundaries. They just migrated there same as everyone else.
