One of the comments I have seen in the wake of the conviction of the current Senate President has been the mantra that if the man had gotten good hopsitals built in his senatorial district when he was Senate President, he would not have been in the hot water he is now.

The problem with the comment is several fold, and I will adress them in a point by point basis

1.Kidney transplants can be done in Nigeria. As this paper (link here) puts it.

..Up to date about 200 live related kidney transplants have been carried out in 7 transplant Centre’s in Nigeria

Above is as at 2016, over ten years.

Also, it costs between 20-25 million naira. Small potatoes for a Ekweremadu.

2. Even if our hospitals were working....and we had a superb healthcare system....it won't mean that the Ekweremadu's would GET a kidney easily.

In developed countries, kidney patients are on long waiting lists for organs. At best,it would take a very long time to get one. So even IF we had working hospitals, and high quality systems...there is STILL the issue of organ scarcity.(I guess the problem now would be rich people gaming the system...but that's another long discussion).

3. Also, as has been said earlier, the young Miss Ekweremadu SHOULD have gotten a kidney from a genetic donor...ie someone close to her genetically like a sibling.

Even if they had been successful in using the young man that they wanted to use, the chances of rejection are much higher in such a case than they would be with a genetically close person.

(That's why a lot of research is focusing on growing organs from scratch for transplant...in the future, if someone's kidney failed, they would just take a few stem cells, and grow a new kidney in the lab and then implant it into the patient. ).

Just thinking out loud.

The universe has it's own justice. Our politicians tend to learn late

Also, the case shows that Nigerians love foreign things too much. I wonder what stopped the Ekweremadu's from going to somewhere like UNTH in his senate district....in his backyard...which has had a kidney transplant programme SINCE 2018.

A kidney dialysis and medical center won't even cost him the value of his locked up mansion in US and UK

Now Malami would seize his asset anyhow

He would have succeeded in his evil plan. One of the advantages of bad government is that, u can be locked up in a foreign country. Ask ekweremadu if I'm lieing
