Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho has faulted the decision of former Nigerian captain, Jay-Jay Okocha to have joined Bolton Wanderers in the English Premier League.

Ronaldinho, who was Okocha’s teammate at Paris Saint-Germain, thinks the move to England restrained the full potential of Okocha.

Ronaldinho, who was full of praise for Jay-Jay, said, “Jay Jay Okocha, wow!! That man made football listen to him. At training, we would watch him doing a freestyle; whatever he wanted to do, the ball would do it. But his problem is that he was too keen to move to England.”

Ronaldinho was close to moving to Manchester United but opted out of the deal to join Spanish giants, Barcelona.

According to Ronaldinho, Okocha would have been better off moving to Spain or Italy, where skilled players like him are highly valued.

Ronaldinho said: “In La Liga or Serie A, he would definitely get a chance to play for a big team because they love skilled players over there. In England, you stand no chance of playing for a big team if you’re that skilled. They think it’s not necessary.”

Okocha spent four years at PSG before moving to Bolton in 2002.

The midfield maestrro made 84 appearances for the French side, scoring 12 goals. At Bolton, he made 124 appearances and helped the team qualify for European football for the first time.

Okocha had in an interview with talkSPORT in 2021 admitted himself that his move to Bolton was poorly thought out.

He said, “I will say that it’s obvious that I didn’t really do my research before signing for Bolton. As a football person, football comes first, not the city, not the lifestyle, but one thing that’s clear is that the training ground was different, the attitude towards the games was different.”

Despite knocks for his move to England, Okocha is still widely regarded as the most talented football player to come out of Africa.

That is just it, England don't play football, they play competition...

That is why most skillful players prefer serie A or laliga those days

True talk, I still find it difficult to believe that Okocha never won AFCON player of the year despite his remarkable and spectacular performance in our senior national team

But he left us with great memories

Again he retired too early

Over confidence destroys, that why in decision making you do not rely solely on what you think it right.

Just like how PO got an advice from mad a man...

But no serious club was looking for him if I could recall.
After his first season at Bolton, only Chelsea added him among Claudio Ranieri's wish list in 2003 and later Sheffield United around 2004-2005. Other rumours were that of Real Mallorca and Malaga in Spain.

I think he wasn't fancied cos Okocha was unserious at some point playing only for fun and not adding to team work. I recalled his performance at 1998 world cup. Entertaining but not good for team play. Or Okocha just didn't have the luck of some players cos he's worth winning APOTY at least once. Especially that 1998 and 2003 edition.

Okocha just wasted his talent in Bolton. If he had gone to Inter, Ac Milian or Juventus, he would have been highly respected on the world stage and would have at least won something with his club.

Emphasis on the difference in technicality between Spain and England.
La liga is technical while EPL is brawny, the reason Spain continues to produce the world best players and scoop European cups the most.

Okocha's agent should be blamed for his plight. His agent really messed up not giving him a good club.

Even though the quote is attributed to Frank Khalid which can't be verified, I think Okocha's going to Bolton was due to old age. At that time, Bolton was recruiting players from different leagues who were at the end of their career.

Okocha was rejected by Man U and Arsenal and no major team came from Spain and Italy due to his transfer fee at that time.

Okocha was fun to watch - dude was phenomenal with dribbling and free kicks.

I totally agree with Ronaldinho.

BTW, Nigerian's Super Eagles died when Okocha and Kanu stepped aside for the young generation.

I've heard this from so many people in our locality here, if high level footballer like Ronaldinho can say the same thing; most likely Okacha didn't took best career decision in such scenario.
