Access Bank, the Nigerian financial institution, has been aggressively expanding its reach across Africa in recent years, with ambitions to dominate the continent’s banking industry. Its parent company, Access Holdings, recently invested $300 million to fund further acquisitions.

Since 2017, Access Bank has acquired more than three banks in three different African countries. In Mozambique, the bank consolidated its operations by acquiring African Banking Corporation, though the cost of the acquisition was not disclosed. Analysts predict that the bank wants 30% of its revenue and profit to come from its business outside of Nigeria.

Access Bank has also acquired controlling shares in Grobank in South Africa, as well as the African Banking Corporation of Botswana. These acquisitions are aimed at countering stagflation and dollar shortages in Nigeria, which have reduced lending opportunities.
