What is NIN?

The National Identification Number (NIN), which is given to a person after successfully registering in the National Identity Database, is made up of 11 incomprehensible numbers selected randomly (NIDB).

A NIN is unique in that once assigned to a person, it cannot be changed, given to, or used by anyone else.

When a death certificate is given to the Commission and the individual’s demise is confirmed, the NIN of that person is retired.

The NIN is used to establish or authenticate an individual’s identification and to link all records about that person in the database.

All Nigerian citizens and residents over the age of 0 (birth) are eligible to register for NINs.

Why Would You Need a NIN?

So that others can reach you, you have a phone number. To help others identify you, obtain your National Identification Number.

After you enroll, NIMC issues you a National Identification Number (NIN), a special number that serves as your permanent identification.

During verification and authentication, it is used to match you with your biometric information and other information in the National Identity Database.

You will use your NIN to open personal bank accounts, obtain your driver’s license, obtain your Permanent Voters’ Card, participate in the National Health Insurance Scheme, obtain your National e-ID card, and travel (international passport application & acquisition). The NIN is set to be used for all transactions in Nigeria requiring identity verification.
