I'd have thought it would be obvious by now that human moderators don't scale, and that they aren't capable of being judged "neutral" and "unbiased" no matter how hard they try, especially since for so many Nairalanders, "unbiased" simply seems to mean "allows people of my ethnicity to run riot while banning anyone who says anything slightly critical about us".

No matter the protestations all applicants are currently making, the likelihood is extremely high that they will abuse the powers given to them once appointed, and while Mynd44 gets a lot of criticism on here simply for being forthright about his views and preferences (which actually makes it easier to hold him accountable), there are other moderators who pretend to neutrality while advancing a blatantly tribalistic agenda, feeling secure that they can do as they please because they haven't bothered to publicly own up to their own beliefs.

Certainly this has been my recent personal experience, when I was blocked for 3 days over a critical comment I made in response to a bigoted troll writing barely veiled all-caps tribal slurs about Yorubas in general and Wole Soyinka in particular: my comment was deleted while that of the troll was left unmolested. There was no way of knowing who did the banning and deleting, and no explanation given, but it was clear from the context that it was motivated by raw tribalism, as my deleted comment contained no slurs or threats, unlike the ones by the troll which were left intact.

I'm saying all of this to point out that if you're serious about ridding Nairaland about its incessant tribalistic trolling, you need to face reality and accept that some measure of automated moderation is required, based on something cleverer than merely a few regexes which inventive trolls can quickly learn to circumvent. Algorithms can certainly be biased, but they are easier to hold accountable and to rectify than human moderators whose actions will likely never be audited.
