Nigeria slip down in FIFA rankings

Nigeria dropped five places to 43rd in the latest FIFA rankings released on Wednesday by the world football governing body.

The team moved up five places in the August edition but losing to Argentina on September 6 negated any advantage they would have got in their victory over Madagascar in a 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier two days earlier.

Ivory Coast, who are rated best in Africa, dropped one place to 16th while Egypt and Ghana also lost places to stay at 36th and 37th respectively.

Nigeria were directly placed behind Burkina Faso and Senegal, who were 41st and 42nd respectively. Senegal moved up seven places to gain their new status.

Algeria (46th) and Cameroon (48th) completed the African teams in the top 50 of the rankings.

Meanwhile, Spain displaced the Netherlands to regain their top spot of the rankings. The leaders only lost the position once since winning the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

With England having taken a tumble (8th, down 4), Germany (3rd, unchanged) now sit directly above Uruguay (4th, up 1), who occupy their highest-ever position on the global ladder. Other movers towards the summit were Portugal (5th, up 3), Italy (6th, up 1) and Brazil (7th, down 1).

FIFA said the highest climbers of the month won one or more of their FIFA World Cup or continental qualifying matches. It added that the latest rankings were the result of 170 Grade A international matches, of which 109 were FIFA World Cup or continental qualifiers and 61 were friendlies.

No one pays attention to the FIFA ranking anymore

England went up to 4th place despite the fact that the game against Holland as cancelled due to the riot,

Then dropped to 8th place after beating both Wales and Bulgaria in a back to back qualifying games for the European Championship next year.

^^and why is Egypt still 2nd in Africa despite not winning a single match in AFCON 2012 qualifiers, being the whipping team and languishing at the bottom of their group?

Won't be surprised to wake up tomorrow and see England @ No 1

FIFA ranking is RUBBISH

Can we just move on with the victories in our games and perhaps win the requisite cup in Africa and then go on to upset the world at that stage. These results will speak for themselves rather than relying on rankings made by people who are not even ranked integrity-wise. Would it not be a major news if Nigeria came from the lowest position in Africa to win the Cup of nations and then after qualifying or teh world cup, come from number 50 to upset the likes of Argentina, Spain, etc?

That will be the 'real ranking'

Please let no one mind this rubbish called FIFA. For a very long time I dont even want to know waht their nonsense ranking look like because in so many occassion they have released nonsense ranking list full of double standard and systematic underground lobbying for good mark in football ranking. All I care about is good football either play by Nigeria, Togo, Brazil or whoever and not fake ranking they are releasing every fouth night.

"FIFA Rankings" *hiss*. I find it hard to vouch for the integrity of these rankings when I can't vouch for the integrity of the body itself. Can a bad tree bear good fruits?

The ranking system involves male and female teams at all level(U-17, U-20, U-20, U-23 and senior team) over the last 12 years.
Super eagles performance may not directly reflect on the ranking system system result due to all the other teams

If so, then Nigeria should be No.1 in Africa. If Im not mistaken, the Nigerian teams @ all other levels apart from the senior male team, have done better than their African counterparts.

The FIFA formula actualluy gives African teams less points for wins. If i.e. Germany beats England in a friendly, than Germany gets more points than Nigeria would. That's how messed up these rankings are.
