Adamawa: Yunusa Ari, threat to democracy, arrest him now-ADAPHAI

A civil Society Organization, Advocacy for Advancement of Peace & Harmony in Africa Initiative (ADAPHAI) has called for immediate arrest of the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Adamawa State, Mr Yunusa Ari, for what he termed a divisive action to subvert democracy in the State.

Recall that the INEC REC, contrary to electoral guidelines and the trend of the exercise announced the candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, as the winner of the poll even before the conclusion of the process.

ADAPHAI, in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Sulaimon Suberu, described the action of Ari as antithetical to tenets of democracy and it's ethos, adding that such tendencies could cause unimaginable crisis that is capable of deraling democratic governance .

According to the statement, Ari has acted in a manner that have brought reproach to the commission and raises suspicion about the integrity and sanity of the whole process from the beginning.

The statement then called for immediate arrest of the Rec and other appropriate sanction in accordance with electoral act and other extant laws guiding electoral process.

"We were taken aback and terribly worried by the development in Adamawa State where the REC, out of desperation took over the responsibility of the Returning Officer in the supplementary election for gubernatorial poll that was declared inconclusive on March 18th, and strangely announced the candidate of APC the winner of the poll even before the conclusion of the exercise.

"This is divisive as it is dangerous to any democratic environment, it is indeed a desperate move to subvert the will of the people and cause monumental havoc in the State.

"There is an urgent need to stop this dangerous trend and sanction the REC and his collaborators to serve as detterent to others with such mentality", the statement read
