The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released a statement denouncing the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Barrister Hudu Yunusa’s purported declaration of Senator Aisha Dahiru, also known as Binani, as the winner of the Adamawa Governorship election.

INEC also suspended the collation of results of the supplementary election.

According to the commission, the REC’s actions amounted to usurping the power of the Returning Officer, making the declaration null, void, and of no effect.

The commission stressed that the electoral process had not been concluded before the declaration was made.

The commission issued the statement on Sunday via its verified Twitter handle, following the supplementary election held on Saturday.

The announcement, issued by Barr Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner for Information & Voter Education, directed the REC to report immediately to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
