Tinubu's Electoral Controversy- With Or Without- Electoral Act Tinubu Has Been D by Aricky1111: 11:11am On Apr 18, 2023 |
A well-known Nigerian journalist named D.H. Bwala recently made a statement on his Twitter account that caused quite a stir in the political world. He claimed that even though people are looking through sections 1 to 320 of the constitution to find a reason to prevent Tinubu from standing for political office, he has already been declared ineligible under the electoral act. The eligibility of political candidates and the requirements that must be satisfied before one may run for office have been greatly questioned in light of this statement. Additionally, it has made clear the need for a deeper comprehension of both the electoral act and the constitution. It's crucial to remember that the electoral act is the main regulation that outlines the prerequisites that candidates must satisfy in order to be eligible to run for office. The act stipulates that in order to run for president, a candidate must be a Nigerian citizen, at least 35 years old and a member of a political party. Similar to that, a candidate for the position of state governor must be a citizen of Nigeria and at least 30years old. According to Bwala's assertion, Tinubu might have been barred from standing for political office due to one of the reason listed in the electoral act. But it is unclear what specifically disqualified him. It is also significant to remember that Nigeria's constitution establishes a framework for national governance. It explains the rights and freedoms of citizens, details the powers of the several branches of government, and lays out the steps required to modify the constitution. According to Bwala's statement, any further action would be taken in the event that Tinubu had been declared ineligible for the election on the basis of the constitution's provisions. This means that if he has been found guilty of a crime, for instance, he may be sentenced to prison under the terms of the constitution.
