If you have passed through a public university in Nigeria and then you think Dr. Ngige isn't making sense , then you should forfeit your degree. Education in Nigeria is heavily subsidized. Nigeria cannot train you almost free of charge and then you run away to a foreign country when Nigeria lacks sufficient manpower in your field of endeavor. The practice is worse than being unpatriotic. It is wickedness. Medical doctors spend less than a million naira in tuition in Federal universities to complete their program. In fact, during the NYSC program, most medical students make back the money they spent on their tuition. Many medical doctors in the foreign countries you wickedly dump Nigeria for spend the first two years of their career paying back student loans. Their salary is high because of the high cost of living in their country which is why they pay an average of 100,000 USD for medical education ( tuition+ others fees). The government doesn't intend to stop you from migrating. No, they'll be stupid to do that because it's against the tenets of FHRs . The FG is simply telling you, if Nigeria is the worst country on Earth, go to Canada, US or UK and spend 50,000 USD to acquire medical training and then work for them. If you want to benefit from our subsidy then you must compulsorily serve us for a few couple of years. However, the policy of the FG is not good for the long run because medical consultants, experts and specialists will greatly reduce in Nigerian hospitals as there's no embargo placed against them. What's the need of having many medical doctors who are not really proficient? The best practice remains improving the welfare of Medical practitioners and enlightening them of their Hippocratic oath to serve their black brothers and sisters. God Bless Dr Ngige. He's a patriotic Nigerian! 212 Likes 36 Shares |

This creemenal. You were practising in the US before coming back for politics. Now you make billions here and call it patriotic service. You don't train anybody free. They pay school fees and you give them substandard training with poor equipements and they have to study until the are almost dead before they graduate. When they get abroad they still have a lot of observation and learning to do. They work very hard to be recognised by their peers. 35 Likes 1 Share |

I partly agree and disagree with him at thesame time, I have my reasons.. Nigeria has a really messed up system I agree but sometimes let's be rational in our thinking. I have friends who were lucky to get federal government scholarships, TetFunds, etc to study abroad, a lot of them after few months would call you and be like "oboy wetin you still dey do for dat useless Naija, Nigeria hopeless, Naija this, Naija that, blah, blah". Thesame country who fund your trip and pays your fees ?! These are people who cannot afford such on their own. On the topic, I know a good medical education cost a whole lot everywhere in the world, even in good private schools here in Nigeria but government has been able subsidize to a point that medical students in government universities pay almost nothing. I think on that part, Ngige is right. Having said that, our doctors would love to stay if they politicians stop looting funds needed for equipping our hospitals, our doctors will stay if Ngige, his family and fellow politicians start using our local hospitals, the monies they waste on medical tourism if retained within our health sector would do a great deal to cub brain drain. You train these people for "free" yet you can't entrust your life to them. 80 Likes 7 Shares |

Really? Ngige the diminutive minister for labor and unemployment, you're reasoning from your Anus. You're senseless to say this. Go and recall all your children from abroad and tell them to work in Nigeria. If a medical doctor gets the chance to leave this country to a better country for greener pastures, he shouldn't leave because he wants to serve his fatherland? You are hypocrite Ngige the short devil. When u fall sick where do travel to? Where did your children sch? Why did u not force them to sch here? Nonsense. You guys have run this country aground and u expect young medical practioners to stay back? 18 Likes 3 Shares |

This issue is a very sensitive one.I think a reasonable exchange rate of 150-250ngn to USD is going to take of the need to search for greener pastures by our health workers. If the economy is doing good and inflation is low, most people won't think of going oversea. 9 Likes |

It's the same sense of entitlement that makes a politician think they're entitled to steal funds if they're in a privileged position of authority. They loot the funds because they think they worked for it therefore they deserve it. 10 Likes 1 Share |

Considering that globalization is a threat to a poor country like Nigeria, it's understandable why Nigerian government came up with that bill to stop doctors from leaving the country. Why would a Nigerian doctor expect to be paid what his counterparts in the US and UK earn? Those countries are extremely rich and Nigeria is a big joke. The earlier we all realize this, the better for us. The only way Nigerian doctors can escape that law is attending a private university (I suppose), which most families cannot afford. Leadership is tough, and Nigéria needs smart people to unlock its potential through diversification and judicious use of scarce resources. That way, everyone will enjoy the country. If we keep voting for people like Buhari and Tinubu, this country is doomed for good. 14 Likes |

N3TRAL: You just proved Ngige right. The sense of entitlement in your write up is astonishing! Nigerians owe the Nigerian government NOTHING! If the Nigerian government decided to make education FREE, it's a welcome development. Nobody forced them to do so. If they decide to make education expensive and make student loans available to every Nigerian, it's also a welcome development. Nigerians will have to decide whether they want to take the student loans or work and save to fund their own education. To be fair to Nigerians, the much touted "subsidized education" in your write up is not even affordable and accessible to millions of Nigerians judging by the standard of living in the country. In the US and elsewhere where education is available to everyone who wants it, many people refuse to take student loans, and many private organizations and philanthropists sponsor education for those who can't afford them, people choose whether they want to go to college or work first and save for college. For you to think that subsidizing education entitles the government to stop people from deciding where to practice their careers, I don't even know what to tell you. Just plain ignorance, that's all! 17 Likes 2 Shares |

Obi2saveNigeria: Be logical with your conclusions. Nigeria cannot afford to pay Doctors the same wages in Europe. The PPP of the Nigerian State makes what they earn in Nigeria reasonable. Let's compare House Rent for instance: A new doctor can afford a year's rent of a decent accomodation in Nigeria with just two months salary. The money his colleagues are paying annually for rent in the US can get him a land in a nice area outside Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. Doctors in Nigeria may not be wealthy but they're doing better when compared to other professionals (per 1,000). 18 Likes 3 Shares |

Saga16: Oga, Lagos growth has nothing to do with Tinubu. Even if you make an idiot the governor of Lagos, investments will still be flowing into Lagos because it has always had the market (population) and infrastructure (airport, seaport, etc.). Plus, Tinubu is too demented, old and sickly to run a country as big as Nigéria. Nigeria is not his tiny Lagos, which is the smallest state in the country. Given how bad Nigerians naturally are, you will need to go and inspect some things yourself and not depend on what your subordinates tell you. That's why governors like Umahi and Zulum are doing well. Tinubu is too frail for that. By the way, this thread is not about Tinubu. I just had to reply you because you quoted me. I have made my point and won't reply you again. 12 Likes 1 Share |

Blue3k: I lean towards capitalism, ideologically and in practice. I despise Nigeria's welfarism practice. I've been consistent in advocating for higher school fees for tertiary institutions over the years. I call it the "problem of dirty hands" which is necessary to bring balance to the educational sector and make actors in that essential industry intentional and competitive. My answer is yes, but I'll quote a response I gave last year during university workers' traditional industrial action as the reason for my answer below 👇 N3TRAL: 5 Likes 3 Shares

Fact is, medical training is damn too cheap in Nigeria. The foremost public university in Kenya which is the University of Nairobi, their tuition per year for Kenyans studying medicine there is not less than N3.2m. which your family must pay if you are self-sponsored and not on govt loan or scholarship. 5 Likes 1 Share |
