A UK court has sentenced Ike Ekweremadu to ten years in prison.

His wife was also sentenced to six years in prison, while the third person, Obinna Obeta, was sentenced to ten years and six months in prison.

Obeta, a medical doctor, was also deprived of his license to practice as a doctor in the UK.

Ekweremadu, Wife, Doctor Jailed For Organ Trafficking

The sentencing follows their conviction in March when they were found guilty of flying in a Nigerian man to obtain his kidney for the couple's sick daughter, Sonia.

A judge at The Central Criminal Court, also known as the Old Bailey, has sentenced former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice and Doctor Obinna Obeta to jail.

At a sentencing hearing on Friday, Ekweremadu was jailed for nine years and eight months, his wife Beatrice was sentenced to four years and six months imprisonment while Obeta received a 10-year prison term.

The sentencing follows their conviction in March for organ trafficking.

The three were found guilty after arranging or facilitating a young Nigerian man’s travel into the United Kingdom in a bid to obtain his kidney on behalf of the Ekwemeradus’ sick daughter, Sonia.

The jury said Ekweremadu, his wife and their doctor criminally conspired to bring the 21-year-old Lagos street trader to London to exploit him for his kidney.

The verdict is considered the first of its kind under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act 2015.

At this point we cannot deny that the plethora of leniency pleas sent by prominent African individuals and organisations, in the form of letters posted to representatives of the British Government, influenced the court in tempering justice with mercy.

It's a fair conviction and sentence, especially, due to the fact that the case is the first of its kind in the United Kingdom brought under the Modern Slavery Act of 2015.

They'll become better Earth citizens when they complete their jail terms.

I hope that my pretty Sonia gets a legal donor and completes the transplant successfully before her parents are released.

I also wish the brave victim well and hope that he goes through a soothing integration into European culture and society. He is the Hero of the story.

This is not justice but witch hunting.

How can you sentence a man that wrote to your embassy about his intention to take someone to UK for the purpose of organ donation, you gave approval.
The donor is not a minor.
What nonsense law do they practice in the uk.
Someone can simply frame you up, boom you'll be serving a jail term

Modified:
For the diseased cows quoting me and insulting their ancestors may y'all be sentenced for crimes you did not commit.

In your little minds the UK legal system is infallible and perfect....the white man can't make any mistake. angry angry

He will be back when the next president has finished his two terms. By then, he might contest for the presidential seat since criminality is justified in Nigeria.

E too short nah. I hate Nigerian politicians eh. When will Joshua Darius visit Europe, dubai or america? He hasn't been there since 2005. We wan find out something. Ibori how market? All your millions of pounds money stashed in those areas of the world, just like your FORMER estates, and mansions in Europe and America that have been taken over by the above listed states? When again will u make any attempt to visit the above listed after spending approx, 8 years in prison

This is grossly unfair

At least nobody’s organ was actually harvested

And he wrote to British Embassy and duly informed them of the purpose of his visit and they never advised him. Not like he sneaked into the UK to carry out the procedure

Nigeria should cut diplomatic ties with UK until this rubbish is reversed

Sure he deserved it.

Was even expecting longer jail term.

Yet, he has a family and equally needs pity.

More pity because, it can be avoided.

But, other Senators,
What have they learnt from this case?
Can they learn from this unfortunate case?

Hopefully, we will not be seeing other senators in UK prison for the things they failed to do?

Once more, it's a pity.

May we have the grace and courage to do the best for the society whenever we have the opportunity.

The jail term is too short. The prosecutor said the alleged donor was treated as a disposable item.

Well-deserved. This is the kind of justice that you can't just help but celebrate. When karma hits, it hits hard. I don't even care if this jail term is for organ harvesting or whatever. I just happier that all the corruption this dude has engaged in as a senator in Nigeria is finally been punished in the UK. I'm sure a lot of his colleagues are watching and realizing that the lack of pity many Nigerians have for this organ harvester is because of the many crimes he committed as a senator. For all the other senators and governors, their day of reckoning is coming and it won't be in Nigeria.
