Hello Cyber friends

Just graduating from school with a BSc. in Computer Science is not enough to prove you as an expert.
Just this month, i got job as a Web Administrator for an ICT/Entrepreneurial company.
Though i understand the basics, and can grasp the job description, there is so much pressure on me as i was employed based on Soft Skills, but i really want to meet up to the challenge.
What can i do and how can i get better at the job. Please i need expert advice as soon as possible.

What are the challenges, either you state them here for advice or read books and material as joomlaman adviced.

Of course, google has so much stuff, but i've to first screen trough all of them, whether trash or irrelevant materials, but what i get at the end of the day is meager. I appreciate your responses, but i'll love more concise directions based on the time target of 2 weeks.

Depending on the nature of the job, you can either create time to read I.T related books or go for I.T courses on part time basics. I use the first approach i.e. Reading I.T (web design) books in the office because i work on saturdays too. This has really help in developing my I.T skills alot. Best of Luck.

Search google for one on one training in that specific area, while that is going on dedicate some hours daily in reading (alteast 2 hours).

you're damn right!  If you don't have at least 10 years of experience under your belt, don't even dream of calling yourself a "guru" or "expert". By going to university, you are merely telling people that you have the ability to learn. In the case of computer science, you have basically spent 4 or 5 years learning how to reason logically. I can tell you from experience that I have used maybe 10% of what I actually learned in school, on the job.

To succeed at your job:
Always learn the latest trends/technologies.  This way, you stay on top of things, arm yourself with marketable skills, and remain a valuable asset to your employers. 

Also, granted Nigeria is unique in terms of high unemployment, don't feel comfortable at one job.  If you find something better, go for it.  The more diverse environments you work in, the more diverse your skills are, the more you will learn and the more valuable you become.

Almost Thesame thing Here, Just Finished my ND program and doing my IT in an IT firm, But i'm keeping up with the challenge having a library of books in my workstation, , working on a php driven site for stock broking company, all the best My GUy,

my advice is dat u should go 4 professional courses so dat u will be more equip because u cant run away from ur shadow pls ICT rules the world am proud to be an IT TEAM member cause is dream come true,

you need not worry because short of your interviewer being in-compotent, they know the skill level they hired. You are fresh out of school and the uncertainty of a new job can drive a new employee crazy with trying to impress the bosses and to make a good impression. It's good to have such pressure but ultimately you will get into the groove of the job and the pressure will subside.

regarding meeting up to the challenge, I'm sure you have a supervisor. Take your concerns and questions to your supervisor in a way that shows that you are interested in learning more than you already know. Most important is to keep an open mind and be willing to learn.

I have to say thanks to everyone here. I find myself in the same situation as many of us here. The best way for you to become a master in a "short" time is to try reproducing your company's website without looking at the codes used by the initial developers.Doing that guarantees that you will be forced to read web and downloaded tutorials and develop real practical skills on your own. More importantly,it will make you fall in love with the job.

i've not really given myself to online learning but that seems to be the only way out here.
At the same time, i'll appreciate any resources anyone can make available here. whether in form of websites, directories, links or events where i can get myself more informed.
If i find anything useful myself,. i'll sure post it here for the house.

Take it easy! Do not kill yourself cos you got a job! Folks are killiong themselves to get a job after school and here you are getting sleepless nights cos you got a job!

One thing at a time son. Eventually you will get the hang things but you need to do that with a cool head. The fact that the firm employed you is a testament of the fact that they are satisfied with what they have. Now you need to gradually ensure that the entrustment of their faith in you is not misplace and obviously, it isn't cos you were smart enough to know where to ask for help by looking for the largest community of online experts here. Good Move. Already you have been battered with wisdom and have gained much that will help you in your endeavor. Let me also add, as they always say, "my 2 cents". (I wonder where Nigerians even coined that term from, seeing that we no longer have kobo-except in bank statements- and neither have we ever used cents!)

To tackle one of your problems-the one that has to do with creating a database of PLR articles for our teeming readership.
I am guessing that your firm do some sort of journal or article writing which they would want their readers to follow and read online? If that is the case, then you will need to create some sort of online facility that will
1. Allow readers to access the journals online and
2. Allow you to constantly add and update the journals/articles in the online database from whence the readers will be supplied with them.


To tell you the truth, you do not have to know every thing in the IT field to succeed, you just have to be SMART! Yes, later you will come back and read how to do stuff like making a website but since you have just two weeks to show your talents, I recommend that you solve the immediate problems with immediate solution!

Google search for free Newspaper/Journal CMS and look for already prepared installable Websites for managing journals. Drupal ,ProsePoint,Joomla,DotNetNuke are some free CMS that can be used for managing articles/journals.
Look through the various CMSs. There will be one that you will find easy to use and manipulate. Study and practice how to use it in 2 weeks and make a test run on your own in your pc to practice if you have mastered the CMS well enough.
then you can show your bosses and one they see that you have started to make the effort, their confidence in you will grow.

Smart people use CMS, so do not think of it as 'cheating' since you did not build it from the scratch. Even this website is a CMS for online social forums. There's always a CMS for anything you want to manage and the best thing about it is that its free!

Just search for joomla journal templates. Some are free some are for sale. You should check your webhost if it has fantastico addons, you can easily install joomla from there. I trained as an Architectect and I have been doing web design since my school days. I believe you can do it!

Thanks a million for your advices, i've begun checking out stuff from google on XHTML, CSS, javascript,etc. they are awkward but if they will get the job done, i've got to be friendly to them too.

For my 4yrs in school, it was terrible as a student because wat i xpected was not given. Instead we were trained to solve mathematics, physics & chemistry.
