Diablo 4 Guide: Understanding Lucky Hit Mechanics And Maximizing Build by cammyaustillgoz(f): 4:37am On May 22, 2023
Today we have an exciting update regarding the lucky hit chance in Diablo 4. In our Diablo University series, we previously discussed the mechanics of lucky hit but were unsure about how increased chances from gear, passive skills, and other sources affected the formula. However, we have conducted further tests and now have a better understanding of the lucky hit mechanics in Diablo IV.

Calculation Lucky hit
Lucky hit chance is determined by multiplying the effect lucky hit percentage, the skill lucky hit, and the sum of all lucky hit total you have, plus one. To illustrate this, let's take an example. Suppose you have a random 100 proc lucky hit, and the Flame Shield skill has a base lucky hit of 35. If you have Precision Magic, which provides 15 lucky hit chances, the calculation would be 100% × 35 × (15 + 1), resulting in a total lucky hit chance of 40.25.

Slots to lucky hit chances
To help you track and plan your lucky hit build, we have added a Lucky Hit tab in the Diablo University document, which contains all the information we currently know about lucky hit sources. Various equipment slots such as amulets, gloves, helms, rings, and off hands can have different ranges of lucky hits based on their gear score or item level. While classes like barbarians don't use off hands, casters can take advantage of these slots to boost their lucky hit chances.

Passive skills to lucky hit chances
Additionally, certain classes have passive skills that synergize with a lucky hit. For example, the Sorcerer has Precision Magic, which grants an 8% to 16% increase in lucky hit chance. Rogues have Primary: Invigorating Strike, providing a flat lucky hit increase, and Alpha Misfortune, granting 15 non-physical lucky hits. Second Wind for rogues offers a stacking 15% lucky hit chance for every 100 energy spent, up to a maximum of five seconds.

Paragons
Paragons also play a role in lucky hit chances, with the Sorcerer having access to the Frigid Fate nodes, which provide a total of 7% lucky hit, and the Legendary To Fate node, granting an additional 15% lucky hit. Barbarians have the Luckbringer Aspect, which can give up to 20% lucky hit, while the Sorcerer's Aspect of Burnishing Venoms offers a 20% lucky hit chance against crowd-controlled enemies.

Several unique items
Several unique items also provide lucky hit modifiers. Notably, the Cowl of the Nameless for rogues grants a 15% to 25% increased lucky hit chance against crowd-controlled enemies. Another unique item, the Grieves of the Empty Tomb, is the only known way to obtain a lucky hit percentage on boots, though it offers a modest chance of 1% to 1.4%.

By combining these various sources, we have calculated the theoretical maximum lucky hit chance for each class. The baseline for most classes is 42%, with an additional 6% if an offhand is equipped. Rogues, however, have a better hat option, reducing their helmet's contribution to lucky hit. The Sorcerer can reach a maximum of 48% lucky hit chance.

The aspect of Burnishing Venoms
One powerful synergy with a lucky hit is the Aspect of Burnishing Venoms. Critical strikes with poison-imbued skills have up to a 10% chance to create a toxic pool that deals continuous poison damage over three seconds to enemies within. While standing in this pool, your poison-imbued skill has no cooldown or charge limit, resulting in significant damage potential.

Recommended skills
Now let's explore some recommended skills for maximizing lucky hits. For Barbarians, Leap offers a 66% proc rate, providing a multiplier of 128. Rogues excel with Shadow Step, which has a 234% proc rate, making it an excellent candidate for the Aspect of Burnishing Venoms synergy. With a high chance to proc, this combination becomes a formidable force.

In summary, a lucky hit is a mechanic that can greatly enhance your build in Diablo 4. Understanding the formula and leveraging various sources of lucky hits, including gear, passives, paragons, and unique items, will allow you to optimize your character's lucky hit chance and unlock powerful synergies.
