UN suspends travels to Nigeria over Abuja blast
TUESDAY, 27 SEPTEMBER 2011 00:00 FROM OGHOGHO OBAYUWANA, ABUJA NEWS - NATIONAL
Moves food summit to Senegal

Steps govt must take against terror gang, by diplomats

NIGERIA is painfully having to lick more of the economic and social wounds inflicted on it by the terror attack on the United Nations (UN) House in Abuja on August 26, 2011.

In the incident, 23 persons were confirmed dead, with 11 of them being UN personnel.

The latest loss Nigeria has suffered from the incident is the right to host the global food security meeting of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) slated for this month in Abuja now moved to Senegal.

The UN agency, which wrote to the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the decision, said it was due to the UN suspension of all official travels to Nigeria “until further notice.”

FAO said at the weekend that the event would now hold in Dakar, Senegal on October 6 and 7, 2011.

Before the FAO’s disclosure, experts had said that the bombing of the UN House would cost Nigeria indirect loss of revenue through decline in the patronage of its hospitality industry and other services.

The cancellation of the FAO meeting in Abuja, as announced by its regional office, diplomats said is just the beginning of other things, and possibly international appointments Nigeria might lose for being listed in the lower ladder of terror states.

The meeting brings together experts and food administrators from across the world.

In an explanatory note to ECOWAS on why the meeting was moved to Senegal, which was made available to The Guardian, FAO cited security threats and the activities of terrorist groups such as the destructive Boko Haram Islamic sect as reasons.

It said: “Following the regrettable and tragic bomb blast of the UN building in Abuja, all UN official travels to Nigeria have been suspended until further notice. For your information, an Organising Team has been set up since to coordinate the meeting preparation,” the statement added.

On the many possible fallouts of the bomb blast of the UN House and the growing climate of fear in the country, diplomatic experts and watchers of international politics, said it has the potential to draw negative attention to Nigeria as unstable and insecure nation.

Do you think that ,privately, and beyond all the politically correct utterance, the International community has faith in the ability of the GEJ government to deal with this new threat while the bombs continue to detonate with alarming regularity? Better safe than sorry would be their mindset. Bush would have lost his job had a second successful terrorist attack occured not too long after 9/11. Cameron would be gone also if the response to the UK riots had not been robust with justice meted out quickly. In Nigeria everyone's job is safe despite glaring incompetence that cost lives and property. Elsewhere it would be unaccepable that so many have died in a sustained attack of wanton terrorism with the Government appearing totally clueless and impotent. The likes of Ban Ki Moon can only view us with disappointment even if he has to be diplomatic in public.

Yet this is coming barely 3days after Obama and the intl community thumbed up GEJ.

It is called political correctness and diplomacy. David Cameron will wax lyrical about the efforts of the Nigerian Government yet he will steer clear of Nigeria or choose to be hosted in Lagos rather than Abuja. If you know the West well , i.e the political culture whereby repeated gross incompetence , leading to dire consequences, is punished, then you will know how they really view GEJ. We don't need wikileaks to fathom their opinion of our President's abilities to deal with terrorism. The actions , such as this from the UN, speaks volumes. Bombings on Independence day, bombing of the Police HQ (targeting our top cop) and the bombing of the UN building (all in Abuja) are a stark indication of a Government highly incompetent at safe-gaurding lives.

Now that the summit hs bn moved to senegal because of the security situation in Nigeria. What about the camance rebels in senegal? Are they not also a terrorist group?. President wade of senegal hs bn in power for about 20years, isnt he also a dictator? Isnt he also guilty of d same crime they accused qadaffi of? And yet they grant him the honour of hosting a U.N summit. Bunch of hypocrites

no matter who thumb u up or down, the truth is that non of them wants to die. we have no security and that is simple. un meetings and other important issues must be moved to countries with security and we can go ahead and decieve ourselves as the giant of africa.
inside them, they all know that we have a one party system of government that we call democracy. they all know that we have a judiciary system that cannot judge a criminals without the consent of jonathan. they all know that we are arunning a one man show. they know how we discharge and appoint our judges.
no wonder bold ones like hilary clinton tells us what we ought to hear instead of what we want to hear.
very soon, nigerians will be sleeping at senegalese embassies and niger embassies to get visas to these countries.
i visited senegal in 2004 only to go back there in 2009, i did not believe how a very poor country has transformed their roads and country.
we have only two possible means of moving forward viz: jerry rawlings method or the egyptian method. anything short of these will be part of our nollywood.
