pocohantas: Well done for giving back to those who sacrificed for you in the past ( read that to mean parents and maybe siblings) Big questions. Even if your situation is better than the rest of your family. How much of what you earn when you are just starting to earn big should go to improve the family situation GIVEN THAT you are just beginning to change your own situation? Should you change their situation BEFORE you are yet to stabilize or should you change their situation AFTER you have stabilized? Who defines when you have stabilized? What if changing the situation for the family NOW is the same thing as stunting your future growth that will make it easier for you to help them and even yourself LATER? I have made big sums from remote jobs but as we learnt recently even FAANG jobs are not guaranteed. At some point in time that funding source became unreliable. Please set up plan B to plan G. I am now more into contracts and even in that field I have seen how change of government/policy/management can affect fortunes for good and for bad. Someone once said until you have at least 7 alternative income sources to depend on, do not relax. 3 Likes 1 Share |

pocohantas: Looool! I can totally relate with being blown Way by the windfall. My first remote job, I worked for two weeks for that month. Just that two weeks work I earned income equivalent to 7 months pay iny previous job. I nearly went mad in shock. And this two weeks was just training o, I hadn't started fully working yet. Sharply I used it to "bless" family people that had stood by me when the going was rough. Of course my tastes went up and I suddenly "realised" that my old trusty Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge was "not too good again. The battery no dey last". So I splurged on a new phone for myself. Bought the state of the art iPhone, airpods for the missus for Christmas. Until I sat down to look at income vs savings. Savings was non-existent. But in all that splurging, I spent considerable amount setting up a solar/inverter setup and bought a brand new Honda generator. That was probably the best decision I ever made because it guaranteed me 24/7 power. I've kind of ramped up saving now but still not where I should be cos of some silly impulsive expenditure lately. I love retail business but damned scared to get into it because you literally have to be on site to personally manage it in the beginning if you want to maintain control, otherwise employees will kill you. |

pocohantas: Lol! USD has really spoilt us remote folks. Even that 1m+ is just Federal minimum wage in Yankee. It's so bad that I now only consider US employers. On the average they pay 2x what European employers offer. I recently needed a piece of hardware for work and the hardware is not readily available in Naija. Employers heard and we're furious I didn't ask. Long story short, hardware was delivered to me in Naija (from Yankee) within 9 days of asking. Side question With the new administration coming in, I expect them to get "aggressive" on Income tax for "us". Do you have a contingency plan for that? 2 Likes |

Fall back plan is always in motion for me. As a salary earner surviving on 60k per month I saved rigorously to start a POS business which my girlfriend was helping me to manage in her mom's shop then. When covid hit in 2020 I was among those laid off but the effect wasn't much cos my POS was running. While my babe was managing it I vowed never to apply for job again instead I dropped certificate to go hustle. On bad days the little profit my babe (sometimes her mom) made would sustain me. Fast forward to 2023 I have 4 fall back plans 1. 2 cars running on bolt (25k weekly from each) 2. A land in Ibeju lekki (used it to tie money) 3. My business (my main stay) 4. Marketing my friend's product (gives me 10 - 15k daily) though not consistent The POS couldn't function like it did since my babe went to school and her mom focused on her husband who took ill. My younger brother I asked to manage was too careless and made silly mistakes that caused losses, the other pple too were careless or rip offs hence I stopped cos I didn't have time to monitor it. Goal is to save enough to build house for rentage 1 Like 1 Share |

Spiritualsdeeps: This is actually unwise. Buying of land is not actually wise as most of you paint it. It is only advisable when your business or hustle has hit a stable finance level that dipping hand into the fund won't affect. So you go advice a business person with a growing and demanding business with goods worth 10 million naira to take part of his fund to buy land of 3 million naira? |

airsaylongcome: Bro, my plan is simple. I will start teaching everything I know. Starting a STEM class for kids with interest. I already had 2 offers from parents in Lekki, but I decline am now for certain reasons. Option 2 is doing same for adults willing to transition to tech... age 27 to 45. You'd be surprised people who just want these knowledge at their convenience. The ultimate goal is to make tech work for me... build out a product that will sell out. |

My only fall back plan for now is to keep saving, stay away from woman make mistake no go happen because my parents dey pray everyday make their only son marry, minimise my spending and if worst comes to worst I will swallow my pride and ask my mum for loan to expand my business. Above all, I am taking things one step at a time and not considering my age(that is where the main pressure is, especially from folks who will compare you with your peers) because the truth of the matter is that with the current economic situation, even back up can vanish within the twinkle of an eye. |
