In Sunday’s elections, President Tayyip Erdogan secured another term in power, extending his rule of two decades. This victory grants him the authority to continue implementing policies that have increasingly leaned towards authoritarianism, causing divisions within Turkey and consolidating its position as a prominent military force in the region.

Following the declaration, observers have said the Istanbul election was marred by “organised corruption” and illegality. Reuters post a video showing Erdogan handing out money to supporters outside the polling station where he cast his ballot in the runoff election.
