Godfullsam: A lot of Nigerian leadera before and Buhari after GEJ did not remove subsidy because Nigerians always said no. That subsidy is now gone is because we don't have the cash anymore literally. |

SenatePresdo: There is no method on earth that you can use to remove subsidy and move a product price up to 200% for example that won’t cause pain. Peter Obi tried playing people few days ago by saying Jonathan gave palliative before removing subsidy. Now ask yourself, if he gave palliative, why then did the subsidy removal fail? Why did people still protested and grounded the country? If you like give every Nigerian BMW car, if you move price up to 200%, some segment of the society will still feel the hurt from the price and still not be happy with the decision. You either be a strong president like Tinubu that knows his decision might not be popular but very important for Nigeria OR be a weakling liar like Peter Obi who would lie that removing subsidy can be patched with palliative before removal. The greatest palliative is economic freedom. If you like give a poor man 10k as handout, in 5 days time, he will still be broke: 11 Likes |

alobright17: In 2011, we were earning far more from oil than we earn now. NLC (wrongly) assumed that the cash was more than enough for subsidy...not seeing what GEJ and his economics people were seeing, that subsidy then was eating far too too much of our money...and problem was going to arise if things continued.(and as the events of the last ten years have shown, they were absolutely right). This year, there isn't enough money from oil, and as at last year we were borrowing literally to find subsidy (before we were paying from our pockets in 2011). NLC probably knows that. and is being forced to be realistic somehow. 2 Likes |

emmykk: Even then, if subsidy had gone in 2011, there were plans on the drawing board to build three new greenfield refineries as at 2010. Plans that did not take off because subsidy made then economically unattractive. Yeah, Dangote built a refinery....but he knew back then in 2014 that he was taking a big risk. There were licence holders for private refineries then, but none of them wanted to take the risk of building a refinery when there was still subsidy. |

nairalanda1: Then it was more of a proactive step rather than reactive , Good economics are the ones who saw tomorrow from yesterday, if the subsidy was done then the borrowing wouldn’t have happened 10yrs later true or false ? |

Bunnatex: 1.You make a good point here. 2.HOWEVER, the fact is, fuel has always been more expensive in all our neighbours, and other West African countries. (In Benin and Cameroon, fuel hovers between N480-500 or more. Niger too has high prices. Cheap smugglied Nigerian fuel has been the hope of the common man in all our neighbours too. Hence the protests. Since there is no more cheap smuggled fuel, the common man and woman has to buy fuel from the official petrol stations, which not only is more expensive, but,(at least in Benin) is taxed. 1 Like |

SenatePresdo: You don't have point. Tinubu did best thing by removing it first day in office. He understands Nigerians very well, if he fails to do that, the cabals will hijack it like his predessessors. He won't be able to achieve it again. Only Tinubu haters will go against subsidy removal, even some haters later have sense to appreciate it. 3 Likes |

alobright17: True. The problem with many countries is that good economic decisions are not always the popular decisions. (Am not sure whether removing subsidy would have ended borrowing. Reduced it , yes, stopped it, no.) |
