"Water & car electrical components are not 5 & 6 oh" We're entering into the raining season again o. On Wednesday, I was sleeping & sleepily thanking God for such a nice rain and weather when my phone rang rudely. A customer was on the phone telling me he was driving back home from work when he drove through a large puddle of water. He admitted he sped right through the pool. Few minutes later, his car went off. He said he started the car again, the car came up but after driving for about a minute, the car went off again. He sent me a video on WhatsApp showing how all the MIL (dashboard lights) on his car suddenly came up and were staring at him. Next day, I went to check the car. The battery was dead, so I put in another one. The car started, accelerated fine, but ALL the dashboard lights were still on. I did some checks, drove the car a little and the car went off. Eventually I saw the car's alternator had packed up. When you put a new battery & you start the car, immediately you remove the -ve terminal, the car goes off (which shouldn't be, because the alternator should still be powering the car). Long story short, we got another alternator and the car worked fine. All the dashboard lights went off (they came up initially because the alternator couldn't power the electrical components on the car). But then, it could have been worse. I've seen situations where water seeped into the ECU (brainbox) and it got spoilt. Also in some recent EFI cars, the engine on some of those cars are designed such that air is sucked into the car from beneath. So air goes underneath through the air box into the engine. In such a situation, if you aren't careful, water can get sucked into the engine. Wahala🙄. In some German vehicles like Benz(typical), there are some important electrical components on the car's floorboards. Those components are not really water friendly. Also, water can cause short circuits in car electricals. As much as it depends on you, avoid speeding through water even if driving through water cannot be avoided altogether. The economy isn't friendly. Let's not add car issues to it. @Niyiadeautos 5 Likes |
