CondenseMilk: Which economist told you that is necessary to build refineries before removing fuel subsidies? None! Charles Soludo, Lamido Sanusi and Pat Utomi have all supported fuel subsidy removal without building refineries. It would cost $10bn by the government to build refineries. If subsidies aren't removed and price deregulated, no bank will lend you $2bn to build a 100,000 bpd refinery in the first place! Dangote and Bua could easily borrow billions as they could use their huge profits from their cement plants as collateral. The only reason why people want refineries built first rest on the myth that if petrol is locally produced, it will be very cheap. Meles Kyari called it a myth. |

Re: Olisa Agbakoba Applauds President Tinubu On Floating The Naira And Subsidy by grandstar(m): 11:21pm On Jun 14, 2023 |
There are blatant holes in your arguments Flets: The people are suffering immensely pre-Tinubu. The Naira fell from 216 to 750 to a dollar from 2015-2023 and you recommend not changing them Flets: A floated currency encourages the influx of Dollars and not the opposite. Massive artificial scarcity of dollars was the order of the day during Buhari's government who did the opposite. That's why you have an old official rate of 461 and black market rate of 750. Nobody was ready to supply forex at the official rate. It led to artificial scarcity. That's why airlines can't convert over $800m and transfer it. That's why your Naira debit card can't perform online dollar transactions. Yes, buying from banks is bureaucratic and your point there is valid. There's need to relax the rules. Also , the resumption of Dollar sales to the BDC would be very helpful. These are still early days. Flets: (The Bible says where's there is no wood, the fire dies out. The subsidy is the problem. Even if it cost $1 to provide the subsidy, it is a blatant waste. The smuggling of petrol across the borders disappeared overnight. National consumption has gone down But the greatest damage subsidies did to the economy was it discouraged investment in construction of private refineries as no bank would lend you money to build refineries if the government sells at a subsidized price or fixes the price. I have been involved in sourcing foreign investors for refinery license holders since rhe early 2000s. The only reason Dangote and Bua were able to receive financing to build their refineries was because of the huge profits from their cement plants were useful collateral. Flets: Let's assume it would cost the government $10bn to provide this subside, that 7 tr. That means government would borrow 7 trillion, or about 2% of GDP. The government would have to borrow the money to subsidize diesel and kerosene. That is $10bn or 7 trillion. The absence of diesel and kerosene subsidies saves the government trillions of Naira and reduces government borrowing by trillions of Naira If the government had not ended the subsidies years ago, the national debt would be much higher. Government borrowing crowds out private borrowing Banks prefer to lend to the government than the private sector. Also, huge borrowing puts pressure on the Nairra. I won't be surprised if the Naira would have been $1-1,000 by now Flets: (Tertiary education is expensive to provide and universities and polytechnics are poorly funded and that's why the quality of education is poor in many of these educational citadels. The educational bill provides the funding from student to enable to universities highly improve the quality of education they provide, perhaps many will now be capable of meeting international standards. In countries where university education is low or free, personal income taxes are very high and tax base is large. Here, hardly anyone pays personal taxes. Quality of education just needs to go up. Flets: Nigerias were already sufferings immensely pre-Tinubu, with Nigeria ranked the poverty capital in rhe world despite his left wing or socialist policies you support. Tinubus policies would lead to fast economic growth and reverse the impoverishment Buhari's 8 years have done to the populace. A better standard of living should be possible. Flets: The removal of subsidies actually reduces opportunities to loot. With the petrol subsidy gone, smuggling ending. Ending the multiple exchange and heavily subsidized sale of dollars at 461 and resale at much higher prices would heavily reduce corruption now there would be very little room to make huge profits. Tinubus policies would lead to massive wealth creation. Wealth creation would create jobs and opportunities for everyone. 1 Like 1 Share |

Flets: For you mind you have written something. It's pathetic that some people still like this cheat you wrote. Anyways I don't blame them, a blind man leading a blind man. Mr. you need to go back and study how to govern, governance isn't about pleasing a small group of people but pleasing a large group of people. You are looking at things at the short term. Look into the long term bro. Nigeria remains backward because our former leaders has always wanted to please us. At the long run, we suffer it. A government must be able to stand on his feet. Do you think it's easy to prosecute, do you think it's easy to mann the border against thefts? We are Nigerians, nearly everyone is corrupt including you, your likes are the one on patrol wearing green or black cloth. Everyone is bribable in Nigerian because of affluent for money. How many cases have we been able to prosecute to logical reasoning till date? So, the best way is to cut off the source of the day robbery in which the president is doing. So later, there will be modifications. |
