Emi Ika! A very wicked person. I remember sleeping very late sometime ago, at about 5:30am. And at about 7am, my phone was just ringing ringing and ringing, I answered and guess what, na nairalander wey begin ask me questions about the tech industry and how he/she wants to be be all inclusive and good at it... at 7am in the morning? My brothers and sisters, how did you think that made me feel? So, yes... I am very wicked for trying to balance my mental health. FYI: everything I know, I thought myself... and I really don't know anything sef. Still learning by the day. So why limit yourself.? 5 Likes |

The OP is clearly a product of Nigeria’s failed educational system. Someone writes their WAEC for them and helps them into higher institution. They copy another person’s final year project and claim to be a graduate. Now tech is showing you shege pro max and you still need another someone to mentor you on how to center a div. The level of entitlement can make a soul on dry fast to vomit. Nobody owes you anything, except maybe your parents and that’s up till say 18. You either pay to learn or you grind to learn. I was given one week to master a new stack at one of my remote jobs. We already have a paying client and few days ago, I didn’t even know the stack existed. Do you think i will come to Nairaland to look for a mentor who spoon-feeds me as i doze away? I grind myself through the documentations, examples and ask questions on relevant fora. Tech is not tailoring. Man up or go and plant corn. PS: I have responded to dozens of emails and i have tried to answer their questions to the best of my ability. All our engagements have been mutual and i try to respect all parties, outside Nairaland banter. I am also not a tech guru. 7 Likes |

There's like hundreds of Nigerian tech people on Twitter that shares content regarding tech activities like remote job links, CV review, laptop giveaways and many more. So instead of waiting for direct mentorship from people that don't know you, interact with people in your niche to gain more knowledge. |

Slimdan360:if you have the slightest idea how many people I personally have tried to groom, then you wouldn't say such. Issue is - most think IT is piece of cake. A lot of people don't want to put in any iota of work, they don't want to miss their social life, and above all, they want quicker money. |

Jashub: My God! I am not one to throw insults but this has to be one of the dumbest takes I have seen in a while. YouTube was made in the US. Why aren't you asking where is the UK developer's version, or where is the Norwegian version. But just because of your own inferiority complex the only thing your head can process is it belongs to a white man. So the Nigerians that post free resources on YouTube are of no significance. Heck I am very sure you don't subscribe to a single Nigerian channel. I am pretty sure your source of frustration is that you thought tech will be a cake work. That you don't have to do any work, you will just find some unfortunate Nigerian to spoon feed you what took them years to pick up. Oga go hustle, I repeat go hustle, programming isn't for the weak. There are so many free resources online that you have no right to be giving this excuse in 2023. If it was back in the early 2000s I will understand but not now. Many people have spent countless hours and energy creating free resources for someone like you to use for free. Instead of finding them and actually using them. You are here crying about mentors when you have already made resources that will definitely get you started faster and better than any mentor will. Hold yourself accountable bruv. Nobody owes you anything. Most devs here struggled to get to where they are and they used these resources they are mentioning for you to get there. A smart person will instead be asking questions like Which YouTube channel will you recommend? What other free resource can I use to get started apart from YouTube. Or hey I struggle to understand so and so concept. Can you put me through or recommend a good resource on it? But no na mentorship be your problem not actually doing the work. Sit down and hustle nobody will do it for you. 8 Likes 3 Shares |

Mentorship is a lot of work. It is not wickedness that they do not have the time to commit to mentoring you. You are just one of the proposed mentees. How many can they satisfy without burning out? When I tried mentoring, these were the challenges I faced; 1) Many thought they would hit in four (4) weeks. When it didn't happen, they started telling me to absorb them into my own work and pay them stipends. I burned out and stopped. Many (male and female) were not looking for mentorship, but a therapist and occasional cougar. I wouldn't do it for money as it is. This is me speaking generally, not about tech. 5 Likes |

It depends on the way you define mentoring The type of mentoring I had was to receive instruction... Go and learn so so and so .. I learn it, do further research... Go and download so so course .... Do a project and send me the link..... Sometimes I run into a bug and we fix it together Problem is most of you want mentor, parent, free teacher, data (sometimes gas plug ) sometimes even babe sef 😂 4 Likes |

Jashub: I completely OBJECT to this. Take TOTAL objection at “It’s a Nigerian thing to be selfish”. There are many of us Nigerians who are very very liberal with information. Damned liberal. When i became active on this sub, I used to regularly download and send learning materials running into several tens of Gigs to people across Nigeria. Exclusively at my cost. I bought the flash drives, I used my internet to download. I paid for delivery. In fact none of the people I sent stuff to ever knew my real name. And there are many people like that in Nigeria. The problem is Nigerians feel very entitled! The other day I pointed someone towards job openings on crossover.com. Next thing I got was that I should come and write the exams for them. I hope this isn’t Jarushub though, because I will be totally disappointed if it is. People will only mentor people if they have a good relationship with them and if the mentee has shown great initiative. Otherwise, you will be pointed to YouTube, your so called “white peoples” solution 3 Likes |
