THE LIFE OF MAN

Man is a being moved basically by what he sees. This is not the same with other animals. Other animals are propelled purely by instinct and nothing more.

Man, based on his nature has ideas and values he has consciously or unconsciously deposited inside of him such that, whenever he sets his eyes on them, he goes beserk. He wants to possession them. A man engrossed in thought about his wretched condition may change course and even betray himself when he, for instance, sees a nude woman of his heart desire. A typical example of this is King David in the Bible. King David was led into committing sin when he saw Bertsheba, the wife of Uriah taking bath. Had he not seen the woman naked, the devilish thought would not have overwhelmed him. Many people have gone into crime because of the things they see others display e.g., clothes, cars etc. Few days ago, I met two young men who confessed to me that they had been lured into crime because of the things they see around them. While one of the boys confessed that the extravagant lifestyle that some 'yahoo' boys in their neighborhood flaunt dragged him into joining the band of fraudsters. The other narrated that he committed the offence of raping a young lady who always dressed in a sexually provocative manner. He further narrated that when he saw her in a club dressed in her usual way, he approached her and she snubbed him. From that moment, he made up his mind that he'd rather have her or die. The girl was just too sexy not to be devoured. With the support of some of his friends that night, he was able to have his way by raping.

How can we insulate ourselves from such negative but powerful force? The answer lies in filling our hearts and minds with the things of God at all times. In this way, we shall not become victims to the devil's wiles.
