Whenever people want to impose their subjective inclination, they use Merit as cover.

The fact is, there is no country in the Western or Eastern world where Merit is chosen instead of preference.

Otherwise, the geeks could have taken over the world. Each of us know that brilliant kid in primary school that never made it to high school, excellent student in high school that never made it to university.

Then, there is that shy and loner college dropout that created jobs for professors, scientists and artists.

Some people even created IQ tests from their culture only to be beaten at their game by good crammer and paste.

Take the U.S Supreme Court that killed Affirmative Action based on ideologies. Merit indeed!

Advantage of merit include:

1. it encourages working hard

2. Kills mental laziness

3. Kills religious bigotry, tribal jingoism and racial supremacy

4. Breaks the yoke of connection (man-know-man)

5. Renders monetary inducement useless

6. Motivates younger folks to cultivate the habit of self education and discipline for moral compass

7. Encourages comparative advance for societal/national edge.

8. Helps to strength the institutions by building capability for institutional independence.

9. Strong men that weakens state apparatus are put under check.

10. The law becomes sacred and supreme above all.

When there are more people that merit certain positions, privileges come into play. But when people who do not merit those positions get there to the detriment of competent people, that is nepotism. No system is perfect but it is not fair for the system for competent people to be pushed aside.

Which is EMILOKAN? MERIT OR PRIVILEGE?
Re: Please Mention One Country Where Merit Overcome Privilege by googi: 5:11am On Jun 30, 2023
I agree with you. Competence is the key but people have a different goal or objective that push capable people aside.

Look at our country. We have so many competent people but they are wasted because of overriding greed or preference. If Nigerian leaders were throwing darts onto a board, Nigeria could have been a better place.

I like competence much better than merit because competence is demonstrative while merit is subjective because it can be skewed to a goal that benefits those in charge.

You're comparing apple and oranges. For any position, in choosing the candidate, its should be based on merit, that is meeting the set criteria for everyone and the best person meeting the criteria is selected. You're confusing merit for academics, they're not same.

Even if you wanna award contract to truck pushers, the person that met the criteria is you'll give and not the person you know or physically like.

You clearly do not know what merit means!
You're trying hard to advocate for quota system but ashamed to mention it.

If you say the person that will represent the country in a race must beat 10s, then someone that gets 9.9s is off. So if one person beats 10s and the ones you like made 9.9s, by merit, you give the one that beat 10s no matter how little he made it past the rest

This is why you cannot name the country where meritocracy is practiced?

This question is probably more important than some people might think. It has nothing to do with either Merit or Privilege.

1. Emilokan was an Agreement between them. 2. It was an Agreement within a party to rotate Presidency between North and South.

Now, Orisa37 already know this history but for the benefit of others:

Quota is not a bad word. When it was changed to Affirmative Action, they turned that into a bad word also. Then, it was changed to Diversity. Even that will be painted black in the USA!

This is what we call Federal Character in Nigeria. But impunity of the Fulani/Hausa disregarded Federal Character.

We cannot blame the North alone. The South, specifically South East Alliance (call it Preference) with the North created a precedent for areas like the old Rivers states to ally with the North for fear of domination by Yoruba and Igbo.

Akintola saw this as an advantage for the West to do the same. Awolowo refused, even when he was promised freedom from jail, he insisted on working with the East.

What has Merit go to do with all these? It is simply Preference! A good example was when President Jimmy Carter wanted Black judges. They came back to him and said they could not find Qualified Black lawyers. He retorted in disgust: In the whole of the USA?

It only in Western Nigeria that Quota is enforced in the name of tolerance and accommodation. Nigeria did Quota for the for the North, it turned to impunity. Western Nigeria did it, it turned to impunity and worse, hate.

Compare Obasanjo cabinet to Jonathan cabinet for Merit and Privilege.

Again, you dont know the difference between running a society on merit and meritocracy.

You're just confused. All developed countries do things by merit.

"Ashiwaju also pioneered merit in cabinet appointments in particular. I want to emphasize this because a major draw back we have, as a nation, is the way we are blindsided into thinking that we can avoid merit and expect to achieve great things. We simply cannot avoid merit.

Ashiwaju demonstrated in the years when he was governor, that political appointments, especially cabinet appointments, should be based on merit. He looked for those that he considered the best possible material at the time regardless of where they were from." Ex Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo.

Nigeria is full of talented people North and South. So if we want merit, we can find them in Nigeria. But Nigerians deliberately avoid the best talents because those people are highly independent.

Do not forget how happy we were that for the first time we had Jonathan, a PhD, regardless of area of specialization as the President. The decisions of the highly informed people with a broad mind, give them an edge.

But if your goal is to loot the country silly, you are looking for accomplices more than talents or merit.

Do not forget that we were in a civil war without borrowing a kobo and naira remained one to one and a half US dollars.

Look at how Dora Akinyuli was "promoted" into a mess.

If you refuse to use your talents or if your primary primordial instinct is to get rich overnight, what good is merit or talent?

Focus on discipline and endurance, merit and talents will take care of themselves.

The same Nigerian that will work diligently when sent to other African countries after their Independence or that will work arduously in Western countries because they are watching him to fail;

bring him home, he will turn to a looter!
